Smith & Wesson Sigma

History

The Smith & Wesson Sigma was an American clone of the popular Austrian Glock 17 pistol. The Sigma was developed in the early 1990s to compete with the Glock series of pistols. It was launched in 1994. The S&W Sigma is slightly more expensive than the Glock 17.

It was so similar to Glock that a lawsuit was filed against Smith & Wesson. The case was settled in 1997. Smith & Wesson paid Glock an undisclosed sum for patent infringement. However, Smith & Wesson also acquired the rights to continue producing the pistol.

However, it turned out that the Sigma was not as popular as the Glock series pistols.

First production model Sigma 40F for . 40 S&W ammunition. It was one of the first pistols to use this ammo. Later came the Sigma 9F with 9x19mm Parabellum ammo. The letter "F" in the name designates the full-size model. The model is also housed there. 357 SIG and . 380 ACP ammunition.

Sigma was the first pistol made by Smith & Wesson to use synthetic materials in the weapon construction. Its frame is made of polymer. The bolt and barrel are made of steel.

Sigma is a short recoil weapon. It uses an improved Browning-style locking mechanism. The pistol has a single action trigger. Manufacturers call this a "safety action." This pistol has no manual safety.

The 9mm Sigma 9F is fed by a 17-round double-layer magazine.

Pistols have simple iron sights mounted in slides. The effective firing range is about 25-50 meters.

In 1999, improvements were made to the Sigma series pistols. The barrel and slider are slightly shortened. The grip and trigger have been improved. An auxiliary rail was added under the barrel. Pistols produced from 1999 onwards are considered "second generation".

However, the model number has not changed to reflect the update.

There are many versions of Sigma.

In 2011, Sigma's design was revised. Smith & Wesson dropped the Sigma name and the new pistols were called "Self Defense" or SD series. Magazines are interchangeable between Sigma and SD series pistols.
