History of the Truvelo SR-20

The Truvelo SR-20 is classified as an anti-material rifle, a product of the booming South African defense industry. The weapon is conventional by modern standards, firing a powerful 20mm bullet, suitable for defeating lightly armored, solidly constructed and other structural targets of military value.

Its large caliber also makes it an advantage when the weapon system is deployed in a "counter-sniper" role, minimizing the impact of enemy snipers on modern militaries.

The design of the SR-20 is in line with other large heavy rifles in the category, with a more traditional layout with a magazine feed-forward as a pistol grip (as opposed to the rear as the common "bullpup" configuration becomes this type of arms). The SR-20 operates through a manual bolt-action process that inserts a new, ready-to-fire cartridge into the firing chamber while ejecting any spent cartridges currently in the combustion chamber. The bolt handle is located on the right side of the receiver near the trigger assembly. Once inserted into the bottom of the receiver, the magazine is fairly flat, and the bottom of the magazine is beveled due to the nature of the tapered bullet.

The pistol grip is ergonomic and the curved trigger assembly sits directly in front of it. There is a shorter front end for forward assist when positioning the rifle. The receiver tapers to the barrel, providing a contoured look.

The SR-20 is officially designed to fire 20x82mm rounds from a detachable magazine. The rifle family is approved to fire multiple ammunition types to meet mission standards, including Armor Piercing (AP), Armor Piercing Incendiary (API) and High Explosive (HE).

This weapon has a barrel length of 78.35 inches and a barrel length of 38.98 inches. Curb weight (without magazine) is 55.12 lbs. Aluminum shoulder rests feature a skeletal design that is fully customizable to the operators taste, with cheek pieces and a rubber-coated rear seat. Likewise, the front-mounted bipod is adjustable and can be folded to the bottom of the weapon.

The long barrel is fitted with a dual-baffle muzzle brake to handle the violent recoil (up to 60% reduction) encountered when firing such a large caliber cartridge. Interestingly, the SR-20 doesn't have any base iron sights attached and pretty much requires the use of some kind of optics (day or night).

The SR-20 comes standard with Mil-Std M1913 Series Picatinny Accessory Rails.

Truvelo says its SR-20 has a range of 1,500 meters (nearly 5,000 feet).
