History of the Kalashnikov SVDM

The SVDM is an advanced version of the classic Soviet-era SVD semi-automatic sniper rifle, now classified as a "designated marksman rifle" (DMR) in modern military terms. While retaining the original design's core features, such as rifle-caliber chambers, gas operation, and semi-automatic action, it has received significant upgrades for contemporary combat needs. These enhancements include tactical finishes, expanded accessory support, and a foldable stock for improved transportability. It is chambered for the 7.62x54mmR cartridge, and its heavy-duty 21.7" barrel comes equipped with a standard 1P88-4 scope for precise aiming.

The rifle's design incorporates key elements like a detachable 10-round magazine, ergonomic pistol grip, and an oversized trigger ring for gloved use. The front end features grooves for the gas assembly and a front sight, with a slotted muzzle brake to control recoil. A removable folding bipod can be attached for stability, and a Picatinny rail allows for the addition of various optics and sights to enhance accuracy. When the stock is folded, the SVDM's overall length is reduced to 38.4 inches, making it more suitable for tight spaces or transport. It weighs 12 lbs and has been adapted to meet the demands of modern warfare.

The SVDM rifle entered service with the Russian Armed Forces in June 2018 and has seen use in various military engagements, including the conflict in Ukraine, where it has also been captured and employed by Ukrainian forces in their efforts to defend their homeland.
