History

9K333 "Verba" (translated as "Willow") - NATO designation "SA-25" - was a shoulder-fired man-portable MAN defense aircraft (MANPAD ) The surface-to-air missile (SAM) system originated in Russia. The system is functionally similar to the American Stinger series, using infrared (IR) homing to shoot down low-flying short-range air targets, but continues the form used by the Soviet Igla SAM system at the time of the Cold War founding coalition.

Launched in 2014, the collection is manufactured by KB Mashinostroyenlya and has been in production since 2011.

From 2022, the Russian military will use the 9K333 with Armenia and Syria. The product entered Russian service as the successor to the aging line of Igla-S SAM launchers.

Similar to the American Stinger series, the base design of the 9K333 features a long cylinder to accommodate a spring-loaded finned rocket. The pistol grip/trigger unit drives the unit, and the optics are integrated.

The main operating parts of the weapon are all located at the front of the system and are carried by the operator's hands/arms, while the rest of the barrel is carried by the shooter's shoulder (allies are better off to avoid back thrust).

The weapon fires a missile with a three-channel (three sensors = UV, NIR, and MIR) optical seeker that can reach targets at altitudes of 21,000 feet. The rocket component is powered by a solid-fuel motor, which is covered with a 3.3-pound warhead.

The solution is capable of handling fixed-wing and rotary-wing threats (including unmanned drones) from a distance, maximizing its tactical value during stealth firing such as ambushes.

In addition to portability, the weapon can be mounted on vehicles and naval vessels to provide defense against airborne threats.
