Heckler & Koch G39

History

The Heckler & Koch G39 is a compact suppressed rifle chambered in .300 Blackout (7.62×35 mm) for German special forces. It is based on the HK437, a .300 Blackout member of the modular HK433 family, and is intended to replace remaining MP5SD suppressed submachine guns in the specialized low-signature weapon role.

The Bundeswehr selected the weapon under the Sonderwaffe schallgedämpft Spezialkräfte program for a suppressed special-purpose firearm capable of using both supersonic and subsonic ammunition. The requirement called for engagement of protected and unprotected targets at distances up to 200 m.

The G39 supplements rather than replaces the 5.56×45 mm G95K used as a principal assault rifle by the Kommando Spezialkräfte. Its combination of a short barrel, suppressor and .300 Blackout ammunition is intended for missions in which compact dimensions and reduced firing signature are important.

Development and procurement

The G39 was developed from the Heckler & Koch HK437. The HK437 itself is derived from the HK433 modular rifle family but is configured for .300 Blackout. Changes associated with the caliber include a relocated gas system, an adapted bolt and a dedicated magazine.

A Bundeswehr contract for an initial batch was concluded in February 2024. The first order covered 176 basic G39 sets intended to establish an initial capability. The stated overall requirement is 988 sets.

By 2025, G39 rifles had been publicly displayed in their compact nine-inch configuration. Heckler & Koch subsequently presented the final configuration during the 10th armament symposium of the Kommando Spezialkräfte. This version incorporated the suppressor, revised furniture and accessory arrangement intended for German special forces use.

The G39 is replacing the MP5SD in its specialized role. The MP5SD uses the 9×19 mm cartridge and an integral suppressor, whereas the G39 employs .300 Blackout ammunition that can be loaded in both supersonic and subsonic forms. This permits the weapon to combine suppressed operation with a longer required engagement distance than the older submachine gun.

Design

The G39 uses a gas-operated action with a short-stroke piston. Its receiver and general architecture are derived from the HK437 and HK433 family. The charging handle is positioned on the side toward the front of the weapon, following the layout used on several earlier Heckler & Koch designs.

Barrel and suppressor

The final G39 configuration has a 229 mm nine-inch barrel. It is fitted with an A-TEC suppressor designed for .300 Blackout. The suppressor is covered by a MODTAC composite heat shield intended to reduce contact with the heated suppressor during use.

The suppressed configuration reduces muzzle blast, flash and the acoustic signature of firing. The weapon can use subsonic ammunition for reduced sound signature as well as supersonic ammunition when higher projectile velocity and greater useful range are required.

Furniture and controls

The Bundeswehr configuration differs from a standard HK437 in several external details. It has an M-LOK handguard, a pistol grip associated with the G95K and a telescopic stock that can also be folded. These features retain the compact dimensions required for a special-purpose weapon.

Sights and accessories

A displayed final-configuration G39 carried an Aimpoint CompM5b red-dot sight. It also had offset backup mechanical sights positioned at approximately 45 degrees and a UNITY Tactical mounting arrangement that raised optical and laser equipment above the receiver. The sighting equipment fitted to weapons in service may vary.

Ammunition

The G39 is chambered for .300 Blackout, also designated 7.62×35 mm. The cartridge permits the use of both supersonic and heavy subsonic ammunition in the same weapon. This characteristic was central to the Bundeswehr requirement because the rifle had to combine suppressed firing with the ability to engage different target types at distances up to 200 m.

A dedicated .300 Blackout magazine was developed for the HK437. Publicly displayed G39 examples have also been shown with 30-round Heckler & Koch Gen 3 polymer magazines configured for the cartridge.

Program status

The G39 is being introduced into German special forces as a specialized suppressed weapon. The initial procurement comprises 176 sets, while the stated full requirement is 988 sets. It does not replace the G95K as the principal assault rifle of the Kommando Spezialkräfte.

Within the special forces small-arms inventory, the G39 occupies the role previously associated with the MP5SD. The 5.56×45 mm G95K remains available for general rifle tasks, while the G39 provides a compact .300 Blackout system optimized for suppressed employment.
