History
Total production of AirCo / de Havilland DH exceeds 6,000 units. The 4 was one of Geoffrey de Havilland's successful WWII aircraft designs (his legacy was later and forever enhanced by the de Havilland DH.98 "Mosquito" WWII fighter-bomber series). Department of Health. 4 were deployed on a large scale, proving that the DH.4 is a very viable combat platform.
9 - The planned successor to DH. 4 - Never stopped raw DH. 4 model series. Hence, Dh. The 4 enjoys an enduring legacy of airborne, with wartime success as a major Allied day bomber in World War I, and peacetime service in aerial surveying and crop pollination until the 1930s.
Department of Health. 4 Designed to meet War Office specifications for light day bombers. Although primarily found under the AirCo name, DH. 4 Manufactured by various subcontractors in England (1,449 aircraft in total) and the United States. U.S. production alone accounted for 4,846 aircraft.
British-built aircraft were equipped with Rolls-Royce Eagle engines (early Eagle III 250 hp, later Eagle VIII 375 hp), while American models were mainly equipped with the more powerful 400 hp Liberty 12 series and operated by the US Army Aviation Service (USAAS )) banner. Despite the Liberty engine, the performance of the American model was not significantly improved compared to the British model in service, in fact it suffered.
Department of Health. The 4 series carried a two crew, the pilot in the front and the gunner/observer in the rear. The locations are quite separated, which hinders communication between the two, although a "talking tube" is even implemented. Department of Health. The 9 Series will solve this problem by bringing the pilot and rear gunner's cockpits close together.
The pilot uses one or two 7.7mm Vickers machine guns on fixed forward mounts, while the rear cockpit is equipped with two 7.62mm Lewis machine guns on trainable Scaffold ring mounts. Department of Health.
4 are allowed to carry up to 460 lbs of external ammunition (2 x 230 lb bombs or 4 x 112 lb bombs).
DH's maiden flight. 4 Recorded in August 1916, the aircraft entered service in England the following January. Department of Health. The No. 4 was adopted by the Americans after entering the war in 1917, and the series entered service in 1918.
Fisher Body and Dayton-Wright account for the majority of U.S. DH production. 4 seconds. U.S. use extends beyond DH's Army Air Service. The 4 was also widely adopted by the Navy and Marine Corps, demonstrating the versatility of its design.
The main British Air Service (Royal Flying Corps) variant becomes the standard DH. 4 days bomber. In the postwar years, biplanes proved popular in civilian circles, and many of them were adapted for use in various roles. Department of Health.
The 4A features a two-person cabin behind the pilot in a glass position. Department of Health. The 4R is a single-seater race car with a 450-horsepower Napier Lion engine.
The United States took the de Havilland design further and produced many variants of the standard DH. 4 days bomber. These include modifications, civilian brands, experimental models, reconnaissance platforms, various engine installations, dual-control trainers, long-range models, and more. The last DH of the US Army.
4 Not retired until 1932.
Both Australia and Belgium operate the series with civilian markings. Military operators include Canada, Chile, Cuba, Greece, Iran, Mexico, Nicaragua, New Zealand, South Africa, the Soviet Union, Spain and Turkey.
The Soviet Union managed locally produced copies of the Polikarpov brand in the postwar years.
Department of Health. 4 is the relevant branch of DH. 4 and appeared in 1917, eventually building 4,091 examples. These are also widely distributed around the world.
