History of ANF Les Mureaux (Series)

The ANF Les Mureaux series of light observation aircraft first appeared in the interwar period between World War I and World War II, especially in the late 1920s, and continued into the 1930s. A vital air force, Muro serves the French Armed Forces as a powerful "Eye in the Air" platform, conducting forward reconnaissance operations from the harshest airfields in the harshest conditions.

By the start of World War II, the system was vastly superior to the German offering, although about 100 were still in service and had been heroic, if desperate, in defending France.

The

Mureaux design was a utilitarian form, with a simple fixed landing gear, an elevated monoplane wing assembly supported by struts, and two seats - the pilot and his observer. With a wide selection of weapons for reconnaissance, night combat and light bombardment, Mureaux is designed to demonstrate a range of up to 600 miles at altitudes above 30,000 feet.

In the heyday of its use, the Mureaux series formed a large part of French military operations prior to World War II.

By the time Germany invaded France in 1940, the Mureaux series had gone downhill. The system was eventually replaced by the more powerful Potez 63.11 series aircraft.

The final variants of the Mureaux series became the Mureaux 115 and Mureaux 117, and interestingly, some were converted into "crude" night combat platforms at the height of the German offensive - such was the desperation of the French Wehrmacht.

The

Mureaux 115 model was the first French aircraft to be destroyed by the Luftwaffe in the early days of the German invasion, when about 100 of these were in service.
