AeroAe. 04 Stories
Further work on Ae by Aero (Czechoslovakia). February 1920 - Czechoslovakia's first indigenous fighter - led to the further development of the Ae. 04 Since 1921. This design uses all the features in Ae.
02 and introduced some Czech aviation services, which needed to be modified to produce new aircraft. Like Ae. 02 but before the Ae. The 04 was produced only in flying prototypes, a form that was never put into service by any world power - not even Czechoslovakia.
Some of the changes made by Czech Aviation Services included the installation of a German BMW IIIa water-cooled 6-cylinder in-line piston engine with 185 hp (built under license locally). This was used to drive the two-bladed propeller on the nose.
The fuel tank was relocated to the fuselage, and the automotive-style radiator was located behind the propeller unit. The wings (I-frame struts of uneven span) are carried over from the earlier Ae. 02 and a single-seat open-air cockpit with two 7.7mm Vickers machine guns.
First flown in 1921, performance includes a top speed of 140 mph (115 mph cruising), a service ceiling of 20,000 feet, and a mission duration window of one hour flight time. 16,000 feet of cold in about fourteen minutes. The prototype set a new altitude record of 20,869 feet in the air.
Later in its life, the aircraft had a modified fairing and chin-mounted radiator unit that significantly changed the look of the nose.
In addition to additional flight tests and an appearance at the 2nd International Aircraft Show in Prague, Ae. The 04 follows the Ae-02 into Czech aviation history, replacing it with another design, the Aero A.18 in 1923.
