Sukhoi Su-29 History
The Russian-born Sukhoi Su-29 worked as a two-seater, single-engine stunt performer. This model, which first entered service in 1991, was an improvement on the early 1980s Su-26, with similar form and function. The Su-29 is currently (2021) in service with exhibition groups from Argentina (Southern Cross), Austria (Flying Bulls), Czech Republic (Czech Aerobatic Team) and Russia (DOSAAF).
The Su-31 is a further development of the Su-26/Su-29 series.
The Su-29 features sleek aerodynamic design lines that exude elegance, speed and performance. The air-cooled radial engine is mounted as usual above the mid-stern and bow mid-section of the two-seat (tandem) cockpit.
The tail tapers to form a single vertical fin mounted with a single horizontal plane to either side. The main aircraft is mounted low on the side of the fuselage and has a relatively straight leading edge and a swept trailing edge.
The tail landing gear is fixed in flight, but the structure is very thin.
All in all, the Su-29 has a barrel length of 23.10 feet, a wingspan of 26.10 feet, and a height of 9.4 feet. Curb weight is 1,675 lbs and MTOW is 2,425 lbs.
Power comes from a single Vedeneyev M14P 9-cylinder 355 hp radial unit driving a high-performance three-blade (7.9 ft. diameter) propeller unit.
In terms of performance, this nimble little performer can reach a top speed of 210 mph, cruise at 185 mph and go up to 600 mph. Service is capped at 13,000 feet with a climb rate of 3,500 feet per minute.
