Sukhoi Checkmate (Su-75) History
The 5th generation Sukhoi "Chekcmate" light stealth fighter is Russia's latest fighter product and is seen as a low cost Russian offer for those interested Invisible spiritual product exporter. The design was sponsored by Rostek National Corporation (UAC) and was teased outside Moscow just days before the MAKS 2021 airshow.
The aircraft appears to be borrowing design lines from the American Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jet and the Russian multirole Sukhoi Su-57 Felon, both of which have inherent stealth characteristics as well as the fifth Generation classification.
At the heart of the fighter is a single-seat, single-engine configuration with proven external stealth characteristics, including nose-to-tail hull ridges. The cockpit is located behind a short nose cone, presumably a state-of-the-art radar unit. The fuselage is deep, tapering at the nose and tail ends, and is designed to accommodate one or more internal machine gun bays.
Interestingly, the air intakes are ventral to allow a clean intake into the turbofan in the center of the fuselage (both the Lockheed F-16 Fighting Falcon and Eurofighter Typhoon have this design quality) . The new fighter also shares some similarities with the Boeing X-32, a prototype fighter that failed to successfully compete with the X-35 for a role eventually filled by the F-35 Lighting II design. The exhaust ports of the engines are connected to the rear of the fuselage by the empennage and are circular.
The main aircraft has a relatively small area delta shape, eliminating the need for a traditional horizontal stabilizer. The fins are flared out and are believed to be fully movable, covering the roles of vertical and horizontal aircraft in more traditional fighter jet designs.
Estimated performance data indicates top speed in excess of Mach 2. 0. Gross Takeoff Weight (GTOW) assumed to be in the 20 ton (short) range. By comparison, the F-35 reaches speeds of Mach 1.6 at high altitude and has a total weight of 25 tons.
The F-16 Block 50/52 aircraft has a top speed of Mach 2.05 and a GTOW of 13.25 tons. Thus, the checkmate can have performance and battlefield capabilities anywhere between the 5th and 4th (respectively) fighter designs.
It is accepted that the Checkmate aircraft on display at MAKS is a full-scale model and not a full-fledged flyable prototype. In addition, the fighter may carry the official designation "Su-75" while in service, depending on the tail number shown.
The main contenders for checkmate appear to include Argentina and Vietnam, both of which are fielding the aging footsteps of fourth-generation (or older) junior fighters. India has also been vying for new Russian fighter types, and the Checkmate could serve well as a light counterpart to the Russian Air Force's heavier Su-57, as the Mikoyan MiG-29 "Fulcrum" and Sukhoi did with the Su-27 "Flanker".
