History

The GrimTech Grim LA-80 is a Ukrainian fixed-wing strike unmanned aerial vehicle under development for attacks against stationary targets behind enemy lines. The design emphasizes a payload of up to 5 kg, a nominal flight range of up to 80 km, and relatively inexpensive construction.

GrimTech presented the LA-80 during the MSPO 2026 defense exhibition in Kielce, Poland. In September 2026, the company described the aircraft as being in the final stage of development and said it was preparing a test batch for military field trials.

The aircraft is structurally similar to Russian Molniya-type strike drones, but GrimTech has emphasized greater payload capacity and longer range as development priorities. Contemporary reports by UNITED24 Media, dev.ua, RBC-Ukraine, and UA.NEWS described the same development program and planned test phase.

Design

Airframe

The LA-80 uses a fixed-wing aircraft layout. GrimTech plans to manufacture the serial-production fuselage by vacuum forming. The company expects this method to produce a lightweight and durable structure that can be manufactured rapidly. The wings are planned to use foam, while aluminum tubes and plywood are also incorporated into the airframe.

Payload arrangement

The aircraft is designed to carry up to 5 kg of payload. GrimTech does not plan to manufacture the warheads itself. Instead, military personnel are expected to install the required munitions. The payload compartment is being designed to accept different munition types, including relatively large-diameter loads. The position of the munition can also be adjusted to maintain the aircraft's balance.

Control and communications

GrimTech is considering several communication methods for the LA-80, including a conventional radio link, digital video transmission, and Starlink satellite communications. The company considers satellite connectivity the preferred option for longer-range control because communication reliability becomes a major limitation as distance increases.

Mission

The LA-80 is intended primarily for attacks against stationary targets in the enemy rear. Examples identified by the developer include fortifications, dugouts, protective shelters or revetments, and military equipment that remains in one position for extended periods.

Program status

As of September 2026, the Grim LA-80 remained in the final stage of development and had not been used in combat. GrimTech was refining the design and preparing a test batch of aircraft for delivery to Ukrainian military personnel for field trials. Serial production had not yet been reported.

The company stated that range depends on payload mass. With a payload of up to 5 kg, the stated flight range is up to 80 km. With a lighter payload of about 2 kg, the aircraft could theoretically reach up to 100 km, although GrimTech identified communication stability as the principal limiting factor at such distances.
