History

EDGE, the Emirati advanced technology and defence conglomerate, completed development of the MK 82 Penetrator on 2 October 2026. The hardened-target munition was designed and manufactured in the United Arab Emirates by LAHAB, EDGE's medium- and large-calibre ammunition subsidiary. The development programme concluded with a qualification campaign covering penetration performance against a range of hardened target types and a sequence of environmental qualification tests. During culminating trials, the MK 82 Penetrator defeated reinforced concrete in excess of one metre in thickness and demonstrated no J effect, maintaining its intended trajectory through the target structure rather than deviating on impact. The specific conditions of the testing environment were not disclosed.

Design

The MK 82 Penetrator is built around the standard MK 82 general-purpose bomb architecture, adding a hardened-target penetration capability without requiring a separate weapons system. EDGE states the munition is compatible with NATO-configuration combat aircraft across multiple generations, including fourth- and 4.5-generation multirole fighters, variable-geometry strike aircraft, advanced jet trainers, light attack platforms, and fifth-generation fighters authorised to carry the MK 82 General Purpose munition. The weapon can also be paired with the EDGE-developed AL TARIQ and THUNDER families of modular precision-guided munition conversion kits, allowing operators to add precision guidance to the penetrator without establishing a separate guidance chain.

Program status

EDGE announced completion of the MK 82 Penetrator development on 2 October 2026. LAHAB described the programme as part of a broader domestic munitions development effort aimed at providing sovereign capability to the UAE and its partners. The next variant in the family, the MK 83 Penetrator, is at an advanced stage of development; EDGE has not disclosed a qualification or production timeline for this variant.
