2S22 Bohdana Story

Many modern militaries around the world have proven popular with highly mobile gun vehicles - wheeled (rather than tracked) vehicles equipped with powerful field howitzers for non-line-of-sight (NLOS) artillery support fire. Ukraine, still at war with its eastern neighbor Russia, introduced the design in 2018, known locally as the 2S22 "Bohdana." This type is used only by Ukrainian ground forces.

The system combines a KrAZ-6322 series diesel powered truck chassis with a proven 155mm field howitzer system. The former is equipped with full armor in key areas (especially the crew compartment), while the latter is equipped with the necessary traverse, pitch and recoil equipment to function effectively on the battlefield.

This design is intended to provide rear fire support to forward combat troops, and the truck components allow for rapid repositioning of the entire gun if necessary.

Design work on the vehicle spanned from 2015 to 2018. It made a public appearance at the 2018 Kyiv Independence Day Parade.

The entire system is operated by five people including the driver and commander. The trip weighed 56,000 pounds. The truck components of the 2S22 are conventionally arranged, with the engine in the bow and the cab/crew directly in the stern. The truck is designed to be flat from the middle to the rear so weapon systems can be placed directly on it.

The installed diesel engine units are rated between 380 and 420 hp, allowing the truck to travel approximately 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) on the road.

The artillery section of the S2SS contains all the powerful elements of a modern 155mm field howitzer. It features a long barrel with heavy duty multi-baffle brakes on its business end. The weapon is designed to have a speed of 4 to 8 rounds per minute and a range of up to 40 kilometers. This is greatly enhanced by the Rocket Assisted Projectile (RAP), which has a range of up to 60 kilometers.

The truck itself carries up to 20 ready-to-fire projectiles, additional reloads require the included ammunition carrier.
