History

The Soviet Union signed a secret non-agglomeration pact with Nazi Germany on August 23, 1939, later known as the "German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact", also known as the "Molotov-Ri Treaty of Bintrop". By 1940, the Soviet State Arms Factory was busy making weapons such as the 72-K (M1940) 25mm anti-aircraft gun (AA). Heavy anti-aircraft guns, such as the 85mm gun, were designed for high-flying bombers, although designed to deal with threats from faster, low-flying aircraft, guns of similar radii were required. Therefore, the lighter 72-K model, designed by Mikhail Loginoff, soon appeared.

The product comes from the state-run Kalinin factory #8 and the total quantity is 2,500 copies.

The 72-K is a single-barrel anti-aircraft artillery system, operated by a crew of five, including a gunner, a gunner assist, and three ammunition feeders. The operation of the 72-K gun is automatic in nature, operating at a rate of 70 to 250 rounds per minute at an altitude of 2.4 kilometers.

The gunner sits on the left side of the mount and controls a 360-degree rotation, while the ammo feeder feeds the desired 25-round magazine into the breech chute and removes empty magazines as needed. The gun mounts were mounted on four rubber tire wheels, and stabilizing legs with end plates lowered to the ground for added stability when positioned to fire. Two armored shields are mounted on either side of the forward-facing barrel for minimal protection. Overall, the crew is generally exposed to the elements and dangers of the battlefield. The wheels are attached to a heavy-duty spring suspension system as it is designed to travel on and off road as needed - attached to the moving vehicle.

The frame is designed to be heavy, and the whole thing is well constructed, adding a sturdy quality to the machine's seemingly practical character. The Soviet Army will deploy 25 to 100 of these air defense systems around important key target areas, including ammunition depots, supply yards, train interchanges and airfields.

Operation Barbarossa became the German invasion of the Soviet Union. The invasion began on June 22, 1941, and opened up the fabled Second Front (or Eastern Front) for German troops. The only real defeat of the German army so far has been in the Battle of Britain, but everywhere else their successes are immortal. German authorities believed that the Soviet Union would fall into German hands within a few months - with the Luftwaffe being a key factor in the coming attack. German fighters and bombers then continued to attack vital installations.

They will face a collection of 25mm 72K guns as well as other defenses. This artillery was indeed effective against a large number of enemy aircraft, and its repetition posed a lethal threat to incoming German pilots. Pushing further, gave the Red Army the critical time it needed to recover and regroup.

The Eastern Front would exist for many years until the Soviet conquest of Berlin in 1945.

Statistics on the effectiveness of anti-aircraft guns may be dubious given the nature of such large-scale conflicts, but Soviet statistics suggest that all anti-aircraft guns combined hit some 21,645 German aircraft. Of these, 4,047 aircraft were assigned to the 25mm system.

Some estimates say that as much as 905x25mm shells are required to shoot down just one enemy aircraft - which is understandable given the "point-and-shoot" nature of these weapon systems.
