Canon de 75 mle 1873 Reffye History

The 75mm Reffye field gun appeared in the second half of the 19th century. Compared to competing guns of the time, the design featured several unique concepts - sliding breech blocks and interrupting bolts. This allows the gun to be efficiently loaded/reloaded from the breech of the gun at a time when most field guns are muzzle loaded.

The system was developed by a certain Jean-Baptiste Verchere de Reffye, who also gave the weapon its name - de Reffye was in France at the time The army served as an artillery officer. He is also credited with developing one of the earliest surviving machine guns, the multi-barreled "Mitrailleuse".

The Reffye 75mm was introduced in 1873 and remained in service until the turn of the century, but the French army was threatened as early as 1875 when it was working on the newer, more powerful 95mm Lahitelle range that year. During the First World War (1914-1918) they completed combat service with the French Armed Forces.
