In 1875, the French Army's first all-steel field gun with a screw breech came on the market with the 95mm Lahitelle Canon de 1875, originally made of bronze, while firing a cased cartridge. The 95mm Lahitelle series survived in French inventory long enough to serve during the First World War (1914-1918) - i.e. because French industry could not match the excellent Canon de 75 (detailed elsewhere) to Satisfies supply and demand on this page) . The design of the Lahitole gun is attributed to Henri Perier de Lahitelle.

The overall layout of the Rashitor gun is traditional. The barrel is mounted on a mounting base with huge wheels with sturdy spokes. The trailing arm is located behind the weapon system in the usual way. The screw cap has a handle to control the opening and closing of the cap.

A sealed breech is paramount for field guns, and the screw design allows the operator to reload the gun from the breech rather than the muzzle (this was common practice on all early field guns, even into the 1860s ). With a caliber of 95mm, it provides good firepower at range. The barrel itself is tapered from the chamber to the muzzle. An additional strap near the center of the tube holds the "arm" integrated with the mounting device, limiting height.

To traverse, the gun just spins around its wheels. Since these early artillery pieces lacked the very useful recoil mechanism of the outgoing canon de 75, they had to be "reset"/retrained after each shot - a major disadvantage of these early artillery weapons.

The 1875 Lahitole model was improved to some extent by the Canon de 1888, and a coastal artillery variant was introduced in 1893 to further strengthen the inventory. However, by July/August 1914, during World War I, the Lahitelle collections were all but outdated - but demand still warranted their use in World War I, at least until 1915.
