The Nerehta AUGV Story
The battlefield of the future seems to be robotic, and Russian ground forces seem to be moving in that direction faster than most. The "Nerehta" AUGV (Armed Unmanned Ground Vehicle) is proof - it behaves as a tracked wheeled remote-controlled infantry support vehicle. So far (2018), the genre has appeared in Russian war games and adds an interesting element to existing modern Russian infantry doctrine. The car will be produced at the Degtyarev plant in Russia and will debut in 2016.
The product was tested by Russian ground forces in 2017. It was further showcased at the 2018 Army.
The vehicle is relatively compact, with a total length of 2.5 meters, a width of 1.6 meters and a height of 900 meters. Its weight reaches 1,700kg, while its payload capacity is set at around 700kg.
The vehicle has the general appearance of a small tank, with its tracks and wheels arranged on the sides of the flat hull. There are four double-wheel road wheels on one side of the car body, the drive is in the rear, and the idler is in the front. Two orbital deflection rollers are used. Centered on top of the fuselage is a trainable, rotatable weapon mount that can mount an (optional) heavy 12.7mm Kord machine gun (HMG), Kalashnikov 7, 62mm medium machine gun (MMG) or 30mm -AG-30M Automatic Grenade Launcher (AGL). For transport rollers, this accessory is removed to make room for externally mounted cargo.
The system requires an operator for proper battlefield function and has a remote control range of approximately 20,000 meters (expandable via pole mount). The electric motor provides the drive.
The
Nerehta is designed to perform a variety of modern battlefield roles, including general reconnaissance, artillery reconnaissance/support, cargo transport, and basic infantry fire support. Its compact size is undoubtedly ideal for light armed forces such as the Airborne Forces, and is likely to become part of the Russian Airborne Forces in the near future.
The tank can also serve the army elements well in urban battles. Its effectiveness on the battlefield will only be proven (or disproved) over time.
