Ural ATOM Story
The Ural ATOM is an Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) project executed by Petrel in Uralvagonzavod, Russia. This is a joint project developed by France's Renault Trucks and Russia's JSC Petrel to produce a heavy-duty modular infantry support platform. It currently (2016) exists as a prototype, the car debuted in 2013.
The chassis of the ATOM is based on an improved version of the French-made VBCI wheeled vehicle in service with the French Army.
When completed, ATOM weighs 32 tons, is 8.2 meters long, 2.5 meters wide and 3 meters high. Power is supplied to the 8x8 wheel arrangement by a 600 hp Renault diesel engine. The power pack is located on the front right. This gives the product a road speed of 100 km/h and a range of up to 750 km.
The suspension system is independent, providing the strong off-road capability expected of this modern armored fighting vehicle. Inside there is a standard crew of three agents, which can accommodate up to eight combat-ready troops. The driver sat in the front left, with the commander standing right behind him. The rear door and fuselage roof provide the necessary access for personnel.
Armor protection can reach STANAG level 5 - the hull supports layered armor as well as Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) blocks for survivability in competitive areas.
The main and only weapon is the turret-mounted 57mm BM-57 series automatic cannon (which is a version of the original Soviet-era S-60 system). The turret is located at the rear of the vehicle and provides a 360-degree view of the tub roof.
The turret itself has a hundred rounds of ammunition ready to fire, and another 100 rounds are located in the hull. Armor-piercing and high-explosive rounds can be carried.
Optional systems include NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protection and Active Protection System (APS) to repel incoming anti-tank threats such as armor-piercing missiles. The vehicle is expected to be amphibious and will be equipped with run-flat tires - standard in many modern AFVs.
As a modular AFV, ATOM will support a variety of out-of-the-box modules to rapidly change the vehicle's battlefield role. In addition to the basic combat IFV form, there are also turretless armored personnel carriers (APCs), battlefield ambulances, engineering vehicles and riot vehicles.
In addition, there are plans for heavy mortar carriers (120mm) and anti-tank guided missile carriers (ATGM).
ATOM is likely to attract foreign buyers more than the actual Russian military - since the Russian military is already equipped with a range of armored vehicle types.
