History
Like the rest of the world's militaries, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) employs a 155mm Self-Propelled Gun (SPG) system. As we all know, this is a conventional weapon with a traditional layout, which was first shown to the public in July 2007 at the anniversary of the PLA.
Since its introduction in 2008, nearly 300 rounds have entered active inventory and will be used to replace the aging 130mm Type 59-1 gun.
PLZ-05 is also known as "Type 05".
PLZ-05 adds massive long-range firepower (direct or indirect line-of-sight capability). It is a complete 35 ton weapon system designed to fire powerful ammunition with special projectiles at a range of 100 km. The main gun is mounted in a movable turret that fully protects the gunner from the elements and dangers of the battlefield.
The tower provides a full 360-degree traversal and elevation. In cruise mode, the barrel is locked to a folded A-frame bracket on the glacis plate.
The entire crew consists of four people, with only the pilot (front left) in the actual hull. Next to its location (front right) is an engine unit with an 800 hp 8V150 liquid-cooled turbo diesel. The landing gear consisted of a typical track wheel arrangement with six twin tire wheels on one side of the hull.
Torsion bar suspension for better off-road driving. Road speeds of up to 56 km/h and a range of up to 550 km.
Armor protection is against small arms fire and artillery jets. Smoke grenade launchers - four launchers each in two rows - are mounted on the front turret fairing, allowing the vehicle to shield itself. 7.62mm or 12.7mm/14. 5mm machine gun for infantry/air defense work.
The main gun can handle up to 10 rounds per minute in continuous fire. Various ammunition types are supported, including unguided, guided (smart), and rocket-assisted types. Additionally, the weapon can fire conventional, infantry, nuclear and chemical bombs as needed.
PLZ-52 is a related offshoot of PLZ-05, ie PLZ-52. The vehicle features a revised body structure and a new engine/transmission pair capable of delivering up to 1,000 hp. This variant is heavier than the original PLZ-05, but faster on the road (65 km/h), albeit with a reduced range (450 km).
Another variant offered is the PLZ-04, which differs by having a 54 caliber main barrel.
