History

NORINCO (China NORth INdustries Corporation) Type 70 is the first self-propelled gun (SPA) built by a Chinese factory. This form is nothing more than a turret-mounted artillery transporter built on the existing frame of the Norinco Type 63-1 armored personnel carrier (APC) in service with the Chinese army.

The Type 63-1 is notable for being the first Chinese-made APC designed, developed and built without Soviet input.

The Type 70 SPA retains the same inherent features as the Type 63 APC, including four wheels on one side of the fuselage, and is powered by a turbo diesel engine. The fuselage adopts a torsion bar suspension system with a traditional track wheel arrangement. Over time, the car was transformed into the "Type 70-1" SPA, which now has five wheels on one side of the fuselage due to the lengthening of the fuselage. Unlike the original Type 70, the Type 70-1 was completed with no overhead or rear protection for its rifle occupants - only the front and side shields remained.

The total number of occupants of the vehicle is seven.

122mm barrel/barrel mount allows +22 traverse. The centerline is 5 degrees to the left and right, and the elevation ranges from +63 to -2. 5 degrees up and down. The main battery can reach a target range of 11,800 meters and fire projectiles of the usual range types, including high-explosive (HE), smoke and flares.

Usually carries 40 x 122mm projectiles and 1,000 x 7.62mm ammunition.

In addition to its 122mm main gun armament, the vehicle is also armed with a 7.62mm Type 67 machine gun based on the Soviet RP-46 system. This weapon can be used against enemy infantry and low-flying threats.

The Type 70-1 was eventually replaced by the 122mm Type 85 design, followed by the 122mm Type 89 itself.
