The Type 653 Armored Recovery Vehicle (ARV) was developed by NORINCO of China for the Chinese Army. A conventional ARV system through-and-through, the design was based upon the existing chassis of the Chinese Type 69 Main Battle Tank sans its turret structure. The vehicle was instead given a dozer blade for moving obstacles and earth, a hydraulically-powered lifting crane capable of 70 ton weights, and other qualities to make it a useful ARV on a battletifled. The turret area was replaced by a fixed hull superstructure to represent the crew operating space.
The Type 69 origins were clearly visible in the hull lines and running gear - which included five road wheels to a hull side. The operating crew was three personnel.
Operators included the Chinese military as well as Iraq, Pakistan and Thailand.
