History
The Patria 6x6 is a Finnish six-wheeled armoured personnel carrier developed by Patria as a cost-effective troop-transport platform that can be adapted for command, mortar, protected transport and other roles. The vehicle combines a common automotive chassis with configurable protection, weapon, mobility and mission-system options. It also forms the basis of the multinational Common Armoured Vehicles (CAVS) programme.
The 6x6 was publicly launched at Eurosatory in June 2018, and an EDR Magazine report states that journalists tested the vehicle in Finland in December 2018. Patria subsequently developed role-specific configurations while retaining a common chassis and automotive architecture. The platform entered service in 2021, when the first CAVS vehicles were delivered to Latvia.
By 2026 the Patria 6x6 had become a multi-national European procurement programme with deliveries to several armed forces and operational vehicles in Ukraine. Germany selected the platform for its next-generation transport-panzer requirement and began preparing local assembly with German industry. Patria's August 2026 announcement confirmed a framework agreement with KNDS Deutschland Maintenance for German assembly and final integration.
Development and CAVS programme
Patria introduced the 6x6 at Eurosatory 2018. The company later displayed a version fitted with the Patria NEMO turreted mortar system at DSEI 2019, followed by a Heavy APC configuration with a 25 mm remote weapon system at DSEI 2021. According to EDR Magazine, the basic automotive system changed only modestly after the early vehicle, while later development concentrated mainly on mission kits, protection, usability, support and customer-specific equipment.
The CAVS programme was launched in 2020 through cooperation between Finland and Latvia. It uses the Patria 6x6 as a common vehicle base while allowing national role kits and equipment. Latvia became the first customer to receive vehicles, with initial deliveries in October 2021. Finland ordered three pre-series vehicles in January 2022 for test use before its serial procurement.
Sweden and Germany joined the programme in 2022. Finland placed a serial order for 91 vehicles in June 2023 and subsequently exercised options for additional vehicles. Sweden first ordered 20 pre-series vehicles in 2023 and then ordered 321 serial-production vehicles in March 2024 for troop transport, command-and-control and medical roles. In May 2024 Latvia opened a production facility in Valmiera capable of manufacturing up to 160 Patria 6x6 vehicles per year, demonstrating the programme's emphasis on local industrial participation.
During 2025 the programme expanded further. Denmark announced an order for 130 vehicles in April and received its first delivery in December. Norway and the United Kingdom joined the CAVS programme in September 2025. Germany became a full member of the procurement programme in January 2025 and signed two serial procurement contracts with Patria in December. Those contracts included a firm German order for 349 vehicles with options for additional vehicles.
German production and integration
Germany received its first five CAVS 6x6 vehicles in February 2026. These were pre-series vehicles intended to support standard testing and preparation for service. In July 2026 the Bundeswehr reported that the Patria 6x6 was undergoing testing at WTD 41, its technical centre for land-based vehicle systems in Trier, before delivery to troops. The Bundeswehr stated that Germany had 349 firm orders in four variants.
On 11 August 2026 Patria and KNDS Deutschland Maintenance signed a framework agreement covering assembly and final integration of German Patria 6x6 vehicles. The agreement forms part of the procurement arrangements signed in December 2025. Patria said it was building German industrial capacity together with KNDS and other local partners and transferring manufacturing expertise as part of the programme. Serial deliveries to the Bundeswehr are planned to ramp up in early 2027, while German local production is planned to increase gradually from 2027 onward. An independent Defense Express report also described the localization effort and the planned 2027 production build-up.
Design
The Patria 6x6 is a 6x6 wheeled armoured vehicle designed primarily for troop transport, but its basic platform can be adapted for several combat-support and command roles. The chassis uses structures and components derived from the Patria AMV XP family. The layout places the driver and commander at the front, with the engine compartment behind the driver and a large rear compartment for troops or mission equipment. A passage on the right side connects the front and rear areas.
The platform is designed around a common chassis that can accept national role kits without changing the main automotive architecture. This approach supports shared procurement and maintenance while allowing customers to select different protection, weapons, communications and mobility equipment. Patria has stated that the expected service life of the vehicle is more than 30 years.
Mobility
The vehicle is powered by a Scania DC09 inline five-cylinder diesel engine rated at 294 kW, driving through a ZF transmission with seven forward and two reverse gears. Standard suspension uses independent coil springs, while hydropneumatic suspension is available for higher gross vehicle mass. The vehicle uses 14R20 tyres; EDR reported that all then-current customers had selected run-flat capability, while central tyre inflation was an option rather than a universal fit.
Maximum road speed is stated as more than 100 km/h, with an operational range of about 700 km. Amphibious capability is optional. Vehicles fitted for swimming can travel at up to about 8 km/h in water, and the maximum permitted mass for amphibious operation is 21.5 tonnes. Coil-spring vehicles can reach a maximum mass of 22 tonnes, while hydropneumatic-suspension vehicles can reach 24 tonnes.
Protection and mission equipment
Baseline protection is stated as STANAG 4569 Level 2 for ballistic and mine threats. Add-on armour can raise protection to Level 4, including on the Heavy APC configuration. EDR reported that the APC configuration retains several tonnes of payload margin that can be used for additional protection or mission equipment. Available options include enhanced heating, nuclear-biological-chemical protection, a higher-output alternator, a winch, additional armour and an amphibious kit.
Armament is customer- and role-dependent. Patria has shown configurations with ring mounts or remote weapon stations carrying a 12.7 mm machine gun or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher, as well as heavier direct-fire weapon systems in the 25-30 mm class. The platform also supports the Patria NEMO 120 mm turreted mortar system. EDR reported that Patria considers turret mass and internal space important trade-offs because heavier weapon installations reduce the volume or payload available for transported troops and equipment.
Operational history
Latvia received the first CAVS vehicles in October 2021, and Finland and Sweden subsequently introduced the Patria 6x6 into service. Denmark received its first vehicle in December 2025. Germany received five pre-series vehicles in February 2026 for testing and preparation before broader troop deliveries.
Ukraine also operates Patria 6x6 vehicles supplied by Latvia. Forty-two vehicles were allocated for Ukraine in 2025, with first deliveries reported in July and the final batch delivered in early November 2025. Patria's August 2026 statement confirmed that CAVS vehicles were operational in Ukraine. The supplied vehicles were reported with additional anti-drone protection, but the available sources do not provide detailed combat performance data.
