History

The PMPV 6×6 MiSu is a Finnish protected multi-purpose vehicle developed by Protolab Oy for troop transport and other protected mobility tasks. The name PMPV stands for Protected Multi-Purpose Vehicle. The 6×6 vehicle was designed around strong mine and improvised explosive device protection while retaining road and cross-country mobility.

The project began in 2009. Protolab worked with SSAB and Lappeenranta University of Technology on the vehicle and its protective steel structures. Testing was under way by 2015, and the prototype completed an 800 km test run before additional winter trials in Finland that year, according to the Army Guide vehicle record.

Finland later acquired a small evaluation batch, and in 2026 the MiSu was confirmed in Ukrainian service with the 12th Special Purpose Brigade "Azov" of the National Guard. The Ukrainian vehicle was fitted with additional anti-drone protection made from external slat structures and rubber elements.

Development and testing

Protolab launched the PMPV 6×6 MiSu project in 2009. Army Guide states that the design work involved SSAB and Lappeenranta University of Technology and was based on requirements associated with the Finnish and Swedish defence ministries under the FIMECC BSA program. The design emphasized protection, multi-purpose use, repairability, and the use of commercial truck components that could be replaced without highly specialized support.

By 2015 the prototype had entered testing. The vehicle completed an 800 km test run, followed by additional winter testing in Finland. MilitaryLand reports that the MiSu was developed in response to Finnish requirements for a replacement for the XA-180 series and that testing began in 2015.

Finnish evaluation order

In December 2017 the Finnish Defence Forces decided to purchase four PMPV 6×6 vehicles for field testing. The purchase was valued at about €4 million in the Army Guide account, and the four vehicles were to be evaluated during 2018–2020. MilitaryLand reports that deliveries began in 2018 and that a Finnish Armed Forces document from 2023 still showed only four vehicles. Army Guide separately lists five vehicles in its quantity database, so open-source totals are not fully consistent.

Design

The MiSu uses a 6×6 wheeled layout and was designed as a mine-protected carrier rather than as a heavily armed fighting vehicle. Army Guide describes the vehicle as using standard commercial truck units to simplify repair and replacement. Its protective structure uses high-strength armor steel developed by SSAB, with protected steel structures developed in cooperation with Lappeenranta University of Technology.

The vehicle is arranged for a crew of two and up to 10 transported personnel. Militarnyi reports a combat weight of about 14 tonnes and states that the vehicle can alternatively carry up to 8 tonnes of cargo. Army Guide lists a payload of up to 10,000 kg and a vehicle weight of 24,000 kg, while Focus also reports a payload of up to 10 tonnes. These figures indicate that published payload data vary by source or configuration, and the available material does not identify the reason for the difference.

Protection is a defining feature of the design. Militarnyi reports STANAG 4569 Level 4 protection, including resistance to 14.5 mm gunfire and to an explosive charge of up to 10 kg detonated under a wheel or under the hull. The sources also describe the vehicle as protected against mines and improvised explosive devices.

Army Guide gives a maximum road speed of 110 km/h. Focus similarly describes the top speed as more than 100 km/h. MilitaryLand reports that the base vehicle was intended to retain amphibious capability, but notes that the extensive external cage and rubber protection fitted to the Ukrainian example would prevent that capability in its modified condition.

Operational history

The first indications of a possible Ukrainian transfer appeared in May 2026, when a PMPV 6×6 MiSu was displayed at DAIMEX Baltic 2026 with a Ukrainian flag on its door. No public Finnish announcement had identified the MiSu as part of a military aid package, and Finland generally does not disclose the detailed contents of such packages.

On 9 August 2026, Ukraine's 12th Special Purpose Brigade "Azov" published photographs showing a MiSu in its vehicle fleet. This was the first confirmed appearance of the type with Ukraine's Defense Forces. The exact number delivered remains unknown. Militarnyi assessed from the camouflage pattern that the photographed vehicle had previously served with the Finnish Navy, but this was presented as an assessment rather than an official confirmation.

The Ukrainian MiSu carried a field-added anti-drone package consisting of slat or cage structures and rubber elements around the vehicle. These modifications were intended to complicate attacks by FPV drones carrying explosive charges. Focus also reported the vehicle's first confirmed Ukrainian appearance and the additional drone-protection structures.

Operators

  • Finland: Four vehicles were ordered in 2017 for Finnish Defence Forces field testing, with deliveries reported from 2018. Open-source quantity data are inconsistent because Army Guide also lists five Finnish vehicles in its database.
  • Ukraine: At least one PMPV 6×6 MiSu was confirmed with the 12th Special Purpose Brigade "Azov" of the National Guard in August 2026. The transfer was not publicly announced and the total number delivered is unknown.
