History

The Ark Robotics A1 is a compact electric 4x4 unmanned ground vehicle developed for military support tasks. The vehicle has also previously been known as the Ark-1.

The A1 combines a lightweight 12.5 kg platform with a 15 kg useful load, independent suspension, a maximum speed of 40 km/h, and an effective range of more than 20 km.

The vehicle is deployed with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and has also been presented as a platform for future UK manufacturing and systems integration.

An Ark-1 with its ground-control equipment was present during NATO's Crystal Arrow exercise in Latvia on 11 March 2026. On 16 September 2026, Babcock and Ark Robotics announced a memorandum of understanding at the DVD 2026 exhibition to explore manufacturing the A1 in the United Kingdom for British and allied forces.

The agreement covers potential UK manufacturing, systems integration, payload integration, training, logistics, infrastructure, and operational support. It also includes exploration of opportunities involving Ark Robotics' Frontier autonomous navigation system, which is designed to allow one operator to control multiple vehicles.

At DVD 2026, the companies demonstrated an A1 fitted with a concept smoke generator. The configuration was intended to allow the unmanned vehicle to deploy a smokescreen automatically at a required location.

Design

The A1 uses an electrically driven 4x4 layout with independent suspension. Its low vehicle weight and useful load allow it to transport equipment while remaining substantially lighter than conventional crewed military vehicles.

The platform can be used for tasks including delivery of ammunition, weapons, and other supplies to frontline positions. Other identified applications include casualty evacuation, smokescreen generation, and remote detonation during clearance of dugouts and buildings.

Mobility

The vehicle has a maximum speed of 40 km/h and an effective range exceeding 20 km. Its electric four-wheel-drive system is combined with independent suspension.

Payloads and autonomy

The A1 has a useful load of 15 kg. Its modular role includes carrying military supplies and mission-specific equipment. A concept smoke-generator payload demonstrated in 2026 showed the vehicle configured for remotely delivered battlefield obscuration.

The UK cooperation agreement also covers possible integration of the Frontier autonomous navigation system. Frontier enables a single operator to control multiple vehicles, although the agreement concerns exploration of this capability rather than confirmation of a standard A1 configuration.

Operational history

The A1 is deployed with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In March 2026, an Ark-1 and its ground-control equipment were seen during NATO's Crystal Arrow exercise in Latvia.

In September 2026, Babcock and Ark Robotics began exploring UK production and support arrangements for the A1. The memorandum of understanding does not by itself establish UK production or service entry, and the manufacturing arrangement remained exploratory at the time of the announcement.
