History

The FFG WiSENT 2 ARV is an armoured repair and recovery vehicle developed by Germany's Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft for supporting Leopard 2 tanks and other heavy combat vehicles. It uses the Leopard 2 tracked chassis and combines protected recovery, towing, lifting and battlefield support equipment in a modular vehicle platform.

The ARV is one configuration of the WiSENT 2 family. Its modular architecture permits conversion between the armoured recovery vehicle and armoured engineer vehicle configurations in less than five hours, while retaining a common Leopard 2-based mobility and logistical foundation.

By March 2016, WiSENT 2 vehicles had been ordered by the armed forces of Canada, Qatar, Norway and the United Arab Emirates. Norway subsequently expanded its fleet, while Denmark ordered WiSENT 2 vehicles in two configurations in 2024.

Norwegian procurement

Norway acquired WiSENT 2 vehicles for protected engineering, repair and recovery support. In addition to its ARVs, the Norwegian armed forces acquired 12 WiSENT 2 AEV armoured engineer vehicles.

On 18 September 2026, the Norwegian Defence Material Agency signed contracts for three additional WiSENT 2 ARVs. The vehicles were ordered through options contained in existing contracts. Eight WiSENT 2 ARVs had already been delivered to the Norwegian armed forces at that time, and completion of the additional order was intended to increase the total Norwegian ARV procurement to 12 vehicles.

Design

The WiSENT 2 is based on the Leopard 2 main battle tank chassis. The common tracked platform provides mobility characteristics comparable with the Leopard 2 and reduces the logistical differences between the support vehicle and the tanks it is intended to accompany.

The vehicle can be manufactured as a WiSENT 2 or produced by extensively reconfiguring a Leopard 2 chassis with hydraulically operated recovery and engineering equipment. The modular design supports recovery, engineering, mine-clearing and bridge-laying roles within the wider WiSENT 2 family.

Crew and protection

The WiSENT 2 normally has a crew of three. The driver can operate the vehicle independently when required.

In its basic configuration, the vehicle provides ballistic protection up to Level 5 under NATO STANAG 4569. Integrated mine protection reaches Level 4. Additional protection options include add-on armour, protection against threats from above and explosive reactive armour. The crew compartment incorporates measures intended to reduce the effects of armour penetration.

Recovery equipment

The WiSENT 2 ARV carries a crane with a lifting capacity of up to 32 tonnes. Its main recovery winch provides a constant pulling force of approximately 400 kN, corresponding to the stated 40-tonne class. An auxiliary winch with a maximum pulling force of 30 kN can be used for lighter recovery work.

A Combat Recovery System allows damaged or immobilised equipment to be recovered and towed while the crew remains under armour protection. The ARV is also equipped with a dozer blade that can support recovery operations and stabilise the vehicle during demanding lifting or winching tasks.

Powertrain and mobility

The WiSENT 2 is powered by an MTU MB 873 Ka 501 diesel engine producing 1,100 kW. It is coupled to a reinforced RENK HSWL 354 transmission with four forward and two reverse gears and electro-hydraulic gear shifting.

The vehicle has a maximum road speed of 68 km/h. A reverse speed of up to 31 km/h and a recovery speed of 40 km/h are stated for the platform. When using its towing equipment in terrain, a speed of 15 km/h is specified. The vehicle can negotiate a 60 percent gradient and a 30 percent side slope.

Operational history

The WiSENT 2 has been procured by multiple armed forces for heavy armoured support duties. Its Leopard 2 basis makes it particularly suitable for formations operating Leopard 2 main battle tanks, where the support vehicle can provide recovery and repair capability with similar mobility.

Norway operates both ARV and AEV configurations. Following the September 2026 follow-on order for three ARVs, the planned Norwegian ARV fleet total is 12 vehicles after completion of the contract. Eight had been delivered when the additional contract was signed.

Variants

  • WiSENT 2 ARV: Armoured recovery vehicle equipped for recovery, towing and lifting of heavy combat vehicles.
  • WiSENT 2 AEV: Armoured engineer vehicle equipped with an articulated excavator arm and specialised engineer blade. The excavator system is rated for earthmoving of up to 300 cubic metres per hour.
  • Mine-clearing configuration: The modular platform can be equipped for mine-clearing tasks, including specialised mine-breaching equipment.
  • Bridge-laying configuration: The WiSENT 2 platform can also be configured for bridge-laying support.

Operators

  • Norway: Operates WiSENT 2 ARVs and AEVs. An additional three ARVs were ordered in September 2026, bringing planned total ARV procurement to 12 vehicles. Norway also acquired 12 WiSENT 2 AEVs.
  • Canada: Had ordered WiSENT 2 vehicles by March 2016.
  • Qatar: Had ordered WiSENT 2 vehicles by March 2016.
  • United Arab Emirates: Had ordered WiSENT 2 vehicles by March 2016.
