History
The Thales Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission All-in-one, designated GM200 MM/A, is a mobile medium-range surveillance and air-defence radar developed and manufactured in France. It belongs to the Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission family and uses 4D active electronically scanned array technology.
The GM200 MM/A combines its radar, mast, power generation and command-and-control facilities in a single transportable shelter. It is intended to perform several missions simultaneously, including air surveillance, surface surveillance, Rocket, Artillery and Mortar sense-and-warn duties, and weapon coordination for ground-based air-defence systems.
The system builds on the Ground Master 200 design and incorporates technology associated with the Ground Master and NS100/200 radar families. The GM200 MM family also includes the GM200 MM/C compact version, while the MM/A is optimized around an all-in-one configuration for surveillance and ground-based air defence.
Development and procurement
By 2026, the GM200 MM/A was a field-proven system and was being selected for new European air-surveillance programmes. Romania signed an agreement in 2026 for twelve GM200 MM/A radars, with the first delivery expected in 2027.
Ireland selected France as its preferred partner for its Military Radar Programme in December 2025. In September 2026, the Irish Department of Defence signed an acquisition order covering five deployable Thales radar systems through France's Direction générale de l'armement. The equipment was subsequently identified as four Ground Master 400 Alpha systems and one GM200 MM/A. Initial deliveries were scheduled for 2027, with Ireland planning to have the complete capability in place by the end of 2028.
Design
The GM200 MM/A uses a 4D active electronically scanned array radar. Its multi-beam architecture is designed to support detection, identification and tracking across a wide range of elevations and bearings while allowing the radar to perform multiple tasks at the same time.
The system is configured as a single 20 ft shelter containing the radar, mast, power generator and two command-and-control positions. This arrangement allows the complete radar system to be transported as one integrated unit. It can be carried by truck and is also described as transportable by road, rail and tactical transport aircraft.
The GM200 MM/A can be prepared for operations in approximately 15 minutes. It can be operated locally or remotely. The integrated configuration is intended to reduce deployment time and improve mobility between operating positions.
Radar capabilities
The radar has a stated surveillance range of up to 350 km and can simultaneously detect and track targets from low to high altitude. Its design emphasizes detection of small, agile and low-flying targets as well as conventional aircraft and missile threats.
Compared with the earlier Ground Master 200, the GM200 MM/A is stated to provide a 40 percent performance increase through its 4D AESA technology. The system is software-defined, allowing functionality and electronic-warfare and cyber-protection features to be updated through software changes.
Missions
The GM200 MM/A is designed to conduct four principal missions simultaneously: air surveillance, surface surveillance, Rocket, Artillery and Mortar sense and warning, and weapon coordination for air-defence systems. Its ground-based air-defence role extends from very-short-range and short-range systems toward medium-range air-defence applications.
Program status
The GM200 MM/A was in active procurement by European armed forces in 2026. Romania ordered twelve systems with first delivery planned for 2027. Ireland ordered one GM200 MM/A as part of a five-radar acquisition intended to strengthen national military air surveillance, with initial deliveries planned for 2027 and the overall Irish radar capability scheduled to be in place by the end of 2028.
Variants
- GM200 MM/A: All-in-one version combining the radar, mast, power generator and command-and-control positions in a single 20 ft shelter. It is intended primarily for air surveillance and ground-based air defence.
- GM200 MM/C: Compact version of the Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission family, configured for greater tactical mobility and rapid deployment. It is suited to missions including weapon locating, counter-battery support and short- to medium-range air defence.
