History

The ELTA ELM-2084 M-MMR is a mobile multifunction three-dimensional radar configuration of the Israeli ELM-2084 Multi-Mission Radar family. Developed by ELTA Systems, a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries, the radar combines air surveillance, air-defense support, and detection and tracking of ballistic threats.

The ELM-2084 family was developed in response to growing ballistic threats and became associated with Israeli air-defense systems including Iron Dome and David's Sling. The radar uses an active electronically scanned array and can provide target information for interception while also supporting detection of artillery, rockets, mortars, aircraft, and other aerial targets.

The M-MMR configuration has also been acquired by European NATO countries. Slovakia ordered 17 ELM-2084 radars under a government-to-government agreement with Israel in 2021 and began introducing the systems after delivery delays.

Development and early service

Development of the ELM-2084 Multi-Mission Radar was launched by ELTA and Israel's defense research and development authorities in 2002. A prototype was used during Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip in 2008, where it provided early warning by detecting artillery fire. The radar subsequently became an important fire-control element of the Iron Dome air-defense system, supporting its first successful interception in April 2011.

The radar family was subsequently exported for air surveillance, air defense, and artillery-locating duties. Canada contracted for ten systems in 2015, Singapore introduced the radar as part of its enhanced air-defense network, and the Czech Republic selected eight radars. Additional ELM-2084 configurations have been acquired by other countries.

Slovak acquisition

Slovakia signed a contract with the Israeli government in 2021 for 17 ELM-2084 radar stations with a reported total value of about €148 million. The program included participation by Slovak defense companies in the production of radar modules. Deliveries were originally planned for 2023-2025 but were delayed.

In August 2026, the first Slovak ELM-2084 M-MMR was reported at a military training area near Trenčín for acceptance testing. The first systems were subsequently assigned to the Slovak Air Force's 2nd Brigade. Slovakia plans to integrate the radars into its air-defense architecture, including cooperation with its Barak MX surface-to-air missile systems.

Design

The ELM-2084 is a mobile three-dimensional radar based on active electronically scanned array technology. The radar can detect, classify, and track multiple types of airborne and ballistic targets while producing a real-time air situation picture. It can also provide target information to air-defense weapons.

The ELM-2084 family is designed as a tactical mobile system. A complete radar installation can include the radar unit, control module, cooling equipment, and electrical power generator. The system can be carried on different transportation platforms depending on the customer and configuration.

Radar functions

The radar supports both air-defense and weapon-locating missions. In air-defense use it detects and tracks aircraft and ballistic targets and can support fire-control functions for missile interception. In weapon-locating use it can detect artillery shells, rockets, and mortar rounds, calculate their trajectories, and determine expected impact and launch areas.

The radar operates in S-band and uses an AESA antenna. Published information for the wider ELM-2084 family describes simultaneous tracking of large numbers of targets and operation in environments affected by ground clutter and electromagnetic interference. The radar family is scalable, with configurations differing in antenna size and the number of transmit-receive modules.

Mobility

Mobility is a central feature of the M-MMR configuration. Slovak ELM-2084 M-MMR systems are installed on Tatra automotive chassis. Reporting on the Slovak configuration states that the radar can move from transport condition to operational readiness in less than one minute, supporting rapid relocation of mobile air-defense units.

Program status

The ELM-2084 family is in operational service with multiple armed forces. In June 2025, ELTA reported delivery of the 250th radar of the MMR family.

Slovakia began receiving its ELM-2084 M-MMR systems after delays in the original delivery schedule. In 2026, Slovakia approved deployment of military personnel and ELM-2084 M-MMR radar stations to Poland and Romania as part of NATO's Eastern Sentry operation. The approved Slovak contingent is up to 101 personnel.

The deployed personnel are tasked with detecting aerial threats, including hostile unmanned aircraft, and monitoring airspace within NATO's Integrated Air and Missile Defence System. Eastern Sentry was established after Russian drones entered Polish airspace in September 2025.

Operators

  • Israel: ELM-2084 radars are used for air defense, artillery detection, early warning, and fire-control functions, including support for Iron Dome and David's Sling.
  • Canada: Ten ELM-2084 Multi-Mission Radars were purchased for the Canadian Army.
  • Czech Republic: Eight ELM-2084 radars were purchased, with the first system delivered in April 2022.
  • Singapore: ELM-2084 radars are used for air surveillance and air-defense duties.
  • Slovakia: Seventeen ELM-2084 radars were ordered in 2021. The M-MMR configuration began entering Slovak service in 2026 and has been assigned air-surveillance and air-defense duties.
