History

CNS Linyi (547) is a guided missile frigate in service with the modern navy of the People's Liberation Army (PLAN). The ship belongs to the powerful Type 054A ("Jiangkai II") class surface warship, consisting of a total of 28 warships in this series. Linyi is the seventh-named ship in the class.

Described as a "multi-mission" surface vessel, the Type 054A is an evolution of the capabilities of China's surface ships, which were once largely concentrated on one-dimensional ships left over from the Soviet era. This helps put the Chinese navy on an equal or near-equal footing with the U.S. Navy, a potential Western adversary.

Stealth plays an important role in these new generation of Chinese warships, which in turn are designed to provide much-needed deterrence to rising powers in the east.

The warship has a modern, clean design line with a raised bow and small obstructions in addition to deck guns with turrets. At the rear is a missile bay containing ready-to-launch surface-to-air or surface-to-surface missiles in a vertical launch system (VLS). Slab=sides shows most of the fuselage layout, with the bridge section at the front and the helipad and hangar at the rear. The front of the structure shows an enclosed mast along with radar, communications and sensor equipment.

There is a broken line between the front and center of the fuselage structure. The smoke funnel with closed flat design integrates the rear mast and its radome structure.

The warship can support Kamov Ka-28 Helix or Harbin Z-9C Haitun naval helicopters equipped with anti-submarine warfare (ASW) roles. In addition, these helicopters can be used for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, humanitarian assistance and, when needed, as Eyes on the Horizon (OTH).

A small Air Force contingent on board supports this humble but mighty fleet.

Armament is a mix of ballistics/projectiles and missiles, not to mention electronic warfare. The deck gun and turret are dual-purpose 76mm caliber. A 32-cell missile VLS exists that can be used to attack air and sea/land targets. Additional weapons provide close and extreme close range defense against aerial threats and suicide gunships. The Anti-Submarine Rocket (ASROC) launcher can be reloaded 36 times to counter submarine threats.

The warship is equipped with 2 quadruple launchers supporting C-803 anti-ship/land attack cruise missiles.

The frigate displaces up to 4,500 tons when fully loaded and measures 440 feet long and 52 feet wide. Combining diesel and diesel propulsion (CODAD) will enable the vessel to reach a speed of 27 knots and a range of 8,025 nautical miles while optimizing fuel efficiency.

The ship's crew consists of 165 employees. Type 344, 345 and 382 radars are used for a variety of missions including fire control, search and track. The H/SJG-206 is used as a towed sonar array, while the MGK-335 is a mid-range active/passive sonar suitable for the bow.
