History
The Type 054A frigate (called "Jiang Kai-II" by NATO) is an important surface component of the modern Chinese Navy ("People's Liberation Army Navy" or PLAN). The combat force consisted of 30 ships and was an improved extension of the earlier Type 054 ("Jiangkai-1") ships (only two were in service).
One of the standard Type 054A ships available is CNS Yulin (569), commissioned in 2010 and playing an active role as part of the South China Sea Fleet.
The warship is classified as a guided missile frigate, making it relatively compact and capable of offshore and blue water work either independently or as part of the main combat fleet. Its displacement reaches 4,055 tons under full load, while its length is 440 feet with a beam of 52 feet.
165 crew members are on board, and a modest wing is retained to support Kamov Ka-28 Helix or Harbin Z-9C helicopters assigned to anti-submarine warfare (ASW) roles. Fully Equipped - Vehicle launches and recovers from the stern helipad.
A full-service hangar is also included so a second helicopter can be accommodated indoors.
Power comes from a combined diesel and diesel unit (CODAD) designed for improved fuel efficiency. The scheme includes 4 Shaanxi 16 PA6 STC marine diesel engines providing 7,600 hp to 2 axles under the stern.
This gives the vessel a maximum sea speed of 27 knots and a range of up to 8,025 nautical miles.
Armament arrangements include projectile and missile-based solutions to counter all modern air, sea or underwater threats. Above the forecastle is a single turret housing a 76mm PJ26 dual-purpose deck gun. 2 x Type 730 or Type 1130 weapons as the last line of defense for the Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) role. Two triple 324mm caliber torpedo tubes were also installed, capable of hunting surface and underwater targets. At the heart of the ship, however, is its 32-unit Vertical Launch System (VLS), which supports the HQ-16 surface-to-air missile (SAM) or Yu-8 family of anti-submarine rockets.
In addition, there are two C-803 quadruple rocket launchers that can launch ship-based or land-attacks.
Completing the kit is a 12 x 87 Type 240mm ASROC launcher with 36 reloads and two 18-barrel Type 726-4 Decoy Rocket Launchers.
Airborne systems include Type 382 radar, Type 344 over-the-horizon target acquisition and fire control radar, Quad with Type 345 series fire control radar, MR-36A surface search radar and dual Racal RM-1290 navigation radar . The hull houses a mid-frequency MGK-335 active/passive sonar array, and the vessel can deploy its H/SJG-206 towed sonar array as needed. Protected satellite communications (SATCOM) are firmly integrated into the frame of the boat.
Type 922-1 is used as a Radar Warning Receiver (RWR), while Type Kashtan-3 is a missile jamming device.
The shape of the ship is typical of modern warships: the forecastle is relatively unobstructed, except for the deck guns mounted on the turrets. Behind this location is VLS. The bridge superstructure is located aft of the VLS with impressive bow views. The main mast is enclosed and accommodates a myriad of sensors, processing systems and communications arrays. The auxiliary mast is only aft and incorporated into a low profile smoke funnel.
The superstructure ends with a helicopter hangar, which then leads to the actual helipad. The side of the board is visible at the hull/superstructure line, creating an uninterrupted surface that gives the ship an essential "stealth" quality.
Currently, CNS Yulin maintains an active presence in the Chinese surface fleet and has been the focus of several public exercises involving her and her class.
