History
The Russian Navy is one of the main branches of the Russian Armed Forces and has received great attention during Russia's post-Cold War revival. The Steregushchiy-class frigate battleship is part of the modernization of the Russian fleet and is the 10th of about 20 ships planned to be procured. The ships entered service after 2007 and are among the most modern products of the Russian Navy to date.
Since then, a more advanced version of the class has been developed, which is a group of Gremyashchiy-class surface ships under Project 20385.
At least two Gremyashchiy classes have been completed, with Gremyashchiy being the leader of the group in 2015, with Prowornyy following in 2016. Western sanctions against Russia have restricted the supply of German MTU diesel engines, which in turn has led to restrictions on the construction of additional Gremyashchiy-class ships.
Gremyashchiy himself was assigned to active duty in the Northern Fleet. In 2011 it was laid on the keel.
The Gremyashchiy class is not a successor to the Steregushchiy class, but is considered a complement to it. These ships feature a more multi-role design and have more missile-directed firepower than their predecessors. The displacement is 2,200 tons, the length is 343 feet, the beam is 36 feet, and the draft is 12 feet.
Power is provided by a CODAD (Combined Diesel and Diesel) unit with 4 x MTU diesel engines driving 2 x axles. Speeds (under ideal conditions) are up to 26 knots and range is up to 3,800 nautical miles.
The Furke-E 3D kit forms the air search radar portion of the ship, while the surface search is performed by the Granit Garpun-B/3Ts-25E/PLANK SHAVE radar unit. Fire control is provided by a Ratep 5P-10E Puma system. The sonar is managed by the bow-mounted Zarya-ME and towed Vinyetka. The GORIZONT 25 kit is used for navigation.
The TK-25E-5 forms the Electronic Warfare (EW) section, countermeasures are 4 x PK-10 launchers.
1 x 100mm A-190 turret deck gun command conventional arms section. 2 x AK-630M Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) for defense against low-flying short-range targets. 2 x 14.5mm MTPU Heavy Machine Guns (HMG) provide extreme close range defense. 2 x 8 Redut missiles housed in Vertical Launch System (VLS) units. A 1 x 8 UKSK unit for firing Oniks, Kalibr or Medvedka missiles.
2 x 4 330mm torpedo launchers are also installed.
Compared to the previous Steregushchiy class, the Gremyashchiy class incorporates more stealth features into the ship's design and construction. This includes ceilings and specially coated surfaces. Above the stern is a helipad for the launch and recovery of a Kamov Ka-27 naval helicopter.
The hangar facility offers comprehensive offshore maintenance options.
