HNLMS De Zeven Provincien (F802)

History

The four Dezeven provincial ships of the Royal Netherlands Navy are mainly used for air defense and command tasks. These are state-of-the-art stealth warships with powerful engines (providing powerful performance), powerful weaponry, and advanced sensors and processing systems. Four ships make up this class, the main unit is the HNLMS De Zeven Provincien itself.

These types entered service in 2002 and today (2018) enjoy an active position in the Dutch fleet. The group was used as the successor to the aging Tromp-class two-person frigates built in the 1970s.

The ships were born out of a three-nation joint venture involving Germany, Spain and the Netherlands - all of which have strong shipbuilding pedigrees. This has led to the former parties adopting different localized names: "Saxony" and "Alvaro de Bazan".

For the Dutch, these ships became the Dezeven provincial class, which is officially classified as stealth "destroyers" with missiles, although in some sources this class is also considered to have missiles Stealth "frigates" as the lines between the two ship types become increasingly blurred with each passing decade.

The typical aircrew is 174 (including squadron personnel), this number rises to 202 if the full command staff is included. The Air Wing consists of one NHIndustries NH90 series medium lift helicopter or similar.

The aircraft can be equipped for a variety of roles, including submarine/ship hunting, general reconnaissance, search and rescue (SAR), and maritime resupply missions.

The power of the vessel is provided by a combined diesel and gas unit (CODAG), where the diesel and gas units work together to achieve the various required maneuvers - be it sprinting or general cruising. Two Wartsila 16 V26 marine diesels with 5,600 hp each and two Rolls-Royce Spey SM IC gas turbines with 24,800 hp each.

There are also 4 Wartsila-Deutz D620 V12 diesel generators, each with an additional 2,250 hp, all of which drive 2 shafts under the stern.

The warship can sail at 30 knots and has a range of up to 4,600 miles. Dimensions include a length of 473 feet, a beam of 62 feet and a draft of 17 feet. The full-load displacement is 6050 tons.

The Royal Netherlands Navy has a small number of ships compared to the world's naval powers, but the existing ships are very advanced and modern in terms of their role. They are mostly from the Netherlands and contain some foreign weapons such as Italian deck guns and American missiles.

Its air defense capabilities have so far proven to have excellent success rates against aerial drone targets.
