History
HNLMS Friesland (P842) is an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) currently (2021) in service under the flag of the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) . It belongs to the four-person OPV group of the Holland class - the other three ships of the class are lead ship Holland (P840) and sister ships Zeeland (P841) and Groningen (P843). The class was laid by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in Romanian waters (Galati) for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) and entered service in 2012.
Friesland laid the foundation stone on November 26, 2009 and officially started construction on November 4, 2010. She started service on January 22, 2013 and is still in service today.
At the time of construction, the warship had a displacement of 3,750 tons at full load, a barrel length of 355 feet 7 inches, a beam of 52 feet 5 inches, and a draft of up to 14 feet 11 inches. Shallow draughts give ships the inherent ability to operate near shore. The installed power includes two MAN 12V28/33D series marine diesel engines, which can propel the warship to a speed of over 21 knots.
The range is up to 5,000 nautical miles, and the ship can stay at sea for 21 days.
With 54 operators on board, there is room to add another 40 or so staff/passengers. The OPV also carries a pair of Fast Raid Intercept and Special Forces Boats (FRISC) and a Fast Rescue Boat (FRB).
At the rear of the vehicle is space for a single NHIndustries NH90 naval helicopter, providing over-the-horizon (OtH) capability and assisting search and rescue (SAR) operations when needed. The helipad is connected to a hangar area that provides improved support options for rotorcraft (up to medium).
HNLMS Friesland is equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and processing systems. These include the "SeaMaster 400" air search radar, the "SeaWatcher 100" active phased array surface search and track radar, and the "Gatekeeper" electro-optical (EO) surveillance unit.
In terms of armament, the ship is equipped for several missions near the coast. This is spearheaded by a 1 x 76mm OTO-Melara "Super Fast" turret deck gun, supported by a 1 x 30mm OTO-Melara "Marlin" weapon system.
There are also up to 2 x 12.7mm OTO-Melara "Hitrole" NT heavy machine guns and up to 6 x 7.62mm FN MAG General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG).
Frisian made headlines in April 2012 when she was involved in a rescue operation on a sailing training boat near Iona. In November 2015, she joined the U.S. Coast Guard to seize cocaine in the Caribbean (the operation was commanded by the Netherlands) and again in September 2018.
In March 2016, she stepped forward to demonstrate force/deterrence against the destructive warship Lieutenant-Admiral Kulakov. Russian navy transits near Dutch territory.
