The HNLMS Holland was the first Holland-class offshore patrol vessel of the Royal Netherlands Navy. The ship was originally intended to perform patrol and intervention missions against lightly armed adversaries such as pirates and smugglers. However, it also has very advanced electronic and radar surveillance capabilities for military stabilization and security missions on the brink of open war.
Instead of sonar or long-range weapons, it utilizes the surveillance capabilities of Thales' integrated mast, which integrates a communications system and two 4-sided phased arrays for air and surface search.
The Netherlands was the first Holland-class offshore patrol ship to be commissioned. On March 15, 2012, the ship carried out its first mission before its actual service, when it returned the beams seized from Royal Charles following the Medway raid.
In 2013, the Netherlands successfully intercepted two illegal drug shipments in the Dutch Caribbean. One of the cargo holds contained more than 2,000 pounds (910 kilograms) of cocaine.
During the 2014 Nuclear Security Summit, the Netherlands and Friesland secured the coastal area between IJmuiden and Hoek van Holland.
The Netherlands deploys around Haiti to provide assistance in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, 10 October 2016.
In July 2018, the crew of HNLMS Holland completed a three-month drug patrol in the Dutch Caribbean and visited New York. In the Caribbean, the Netherlands also performs coast guard duties. The Dutch sister ship Friesland replaced the ship in the Caribbean.
In August 2021, the Netherlands was again deployed to Haiti to support the mandate of the EU Civil Defence Mechanism in response to the 2021 Haiti earthquake and subsequent tropical depression, gathering intelligence, security, helicopters and security support, including a team of Armed team provided.
