History
In the 1970s, the Soviet Union built a new group of small frigates called the Nanuchka class (also known as Project 1234 "Ovod"). The total force eventually reached 47 ships, with one example removed. Five ended up missing under various circumstances, and twenty-seven retired (as of 2017).
About a dozen are still in service with the modern Russian Navy (2017), and Algeria currently operates three ships.
The class is classified as a "missile boat" and is built in three large batches and one one-off boat: Series I, Series II, Series III, and Series IV. The Russian Navy employs 17 ships of the I series and 18 series III ships. The Series IV was a single vessel called the "Nakat", but this was primarily used as a test bed for the P-800 "Oniks" anti-ship cruise missile - which she retired in 2012.
The Series II brand is the main export model to various Soviet Union countries in Africa and Asia.
The ships have a displacement of 570 tons under standard load, an overall length of 195 feet, a beam of 41 feet, and a draft of 7.9 feet. Propulsion is via 3 x marine diesels outputting 30,000 hp and powering 3 x axles under the stern.
It has a range of up to 2,500 nautical miles and a speed of 32 knots under ideal conditions. There are forty operators on board.
The ship is equipped with surface search and fire control radars. The armament is centered on 6 x SS-N-9 medium-range anti-ship missiles, although the export variant uses 4 x SS-N-2 missile systems instead.
In addition, there is an SA-N-4 Rocket Launcher (SAM), which can be loaded with about 20 rounds. Conventional armament consists of 1 x 57mm AK-257 with dual cannon and turret deck gun (Series I). On Series III ships, this was replaced with a single-gun 76mm armament.
Close-range threats are addressed by a single Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) 30mm AK-630 (Series III) unit.
The Nanuchka class is used by the navies of Russia/Soviet Union, Algeria, India (all decommissioned) and Libya (all missing).
