History

The

Sigma class is a modular warship design originating from the Damen Schelde Naval Shipyard in the Netherlands, mainly for export. The course is currently working with the Indonesian Navy, the Mexican Navy and the Royal Moroccan Navy. 18 were originally planned, of which 10 were completed and 1 was cancelled (Vietnamese Navy).

Construction started in 2005 and the first vessel was commissioned in 2007.

The Indonesian ships were KRI Diponegoro (365), KRI Sultan Hasanuddin (366), KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda (367) and KRI Frans Kaisiepo (368). Mexico operates ARM Reformador (101). Morocco can visit RMNS Tarik Ben Ziyad (613), RMNS Sultan Moulay Ismail (614) and RMNS Allal Ben Abdellah (615).

All are in service at the time of writing (2019).

At the heart of the Sigma-class design is a modular approach - the vessel can be built to meet specific customer needs, and the final product can cover the basic form of fast attack frigate, standard ocean frigate, offshore patrol vessel or frigate combat. Inherent stealth features include a low, enclosed chimney, enclosed/integrated main mast and plate side hull structure.

Deck guns with turrets are placed above the forecastle in position "A". Aft is a stepped hull superstructure that extends to the integrated bridge section that houses the integrated main mast on which the various communication and sensor ports are mounted.

In addition, there are a series of surface-to-air missile (SAM) launchers, which are aft of the flat smoke funnel assembly above the midship. The rear of the superstructure accommodates a full-service helicopter hangar for use with the aft helipad (for servicing a Navy helicopter).

Structural dimensions include 297.6 ft barrel length, 42.8 ft beam and 11.9 ft draft. According to the overall configuration, the displacement reaches 1700 tons. These boats can serve crews of up to 80 people.

The sonar is mounted in the bow, giving the warship an advantage over enemy submarines. Other systems installed include Thales Group's TACTICOS, MW08 3D surveillance/search radar, Sperry Marine's BridgeMasterE ARPA radar and LIROD Mk.2 tracking fire control radar.

ESM (Thales DR3000), ECM (Racal Scorpion 2L) and bait kits (TERMA SKWS, DLT-12T) are all part of the marine accessories.

Armament includes 76mm OTO-Melara deck gun with turret, 2 x 20mm Denel GI-2 (GIAT M693/F2) automatic cannons, 2 x MBDA Mistral TETRAL quad surface-to-air missile launchers, 4 x MBDA Exocet MM 40 Block II anti-ship missile and 2 triple torpedo tubes to support the EuroTorp 3A 244S Model II/MU-90 torpedo series.

Mounted armament includes 2 x SEMT Pielstick 20PA6B STC engines and 4 x Caterpillar 3406C TA generators driving 2 x Rolls-Royce propellers at the stern. In ideal conditions, top speed reaches 28 knots, although cruising speed is usually around 18 knots. Range up to 5,500 miles.
