History

Sparta is a Russian-flagged Ro-Ro cargo ship associated with Russian maritime logistics in the Mediterranean Sea. VesselFinder identifies the ship as IMO 9268710 and records its construction in 2003.

The vessel has been used by Oboronlogistics in the maritime logistics system commonly known as the Syrian Express. This network has transported military equipment, weapons, ammunition, fuel and other cargo between Russian ports and Tartus in Syria.

Sparta has continued to appear on routes connected with Russian operations around Syria, including voyages during the reduction and reorganization of the Russian military presence in the country.

In January 2025, satellite imagery showed Russian military equipment being loaded onto the transport vessels Sparta and Sparta II at Tartus as Russia began moving equipment from Syria. The two vessels are separate ships and should not be confused with one another.

On 22 May 2026, Sparta was reported sailing westward from Tartus together with General Skobelev under escort by the Russian Navy corvette Boikiy. The transit through the Strait of Gibraltar was described as part of continuing Syrian Express maritime activity by Itamilradar.

In August 2026, Sparta again sailed through the Mediterranean as part of a Russian ship group. The formation included the destroyer Admiral Levchenko, Sparta and the tanker General Skobelev. After passing the Strait of Gibraltar on 27 August, the vessels stopped transmitting AIS tracking signals.

Photographs of the group were published by OSINT observers on 1 September 2026. Sparta's officially indicated destination was Port Said in Egypt. However, Russian vessels had previously used Port Said as a declared destination before continuing toward Tartus, so a Syrian destination was considered possible. The actual destination and the nature of Sparta's cargo were not confirmed.

Sparta is classified as a Ro-Ro cargo ship. Vessel records identify it by IMO number 9268710 and MMSI 273389870. The ship sails under the Russian flag.

The available sources do not provide verified dimensions, cargo capacity, propulsion details or loading-system specifications for this particular Sparta. Technical information published for similarly named vessels such as Sparta II or Sparta IV refers to different ships and is therefore not applicable to Sparta.

Operational history

Sparta has been used by Oboronlogistics for cargo movements connected with the Syrian Express. The logistics route supported Russian facilities in Syria, particularly Tartus, for years.

During the January 2025 movement of Russian equipment from Tartus, satellite imagery recorded Sparta alongside Sparta II while military property was being loaded onto transport ships. In May 2026, Sparta was observed returning west from Tartus with General Skobelev under Russian naval escort.

The August and September 2026 eastbound voyage showed that Sparta remained active on Mediterranean routes associated with Russian logistics. Its AIS signal disappeared after the group passed Gibraltar, limiting open-source tracking of its subsequent route.
