History

The M51 submarine-launched ballistic missile programme originated as the M5 in the late 1980s, with initial design work led by Aérospatiale. The programme was renamed M51 in 1996 following a 20 percent reduction in projected development costs. ArianeGroup serves as the industrial prime contractor for the M51 programme on behalf of the Direction générale de l'armement (DGA), covering design, production, maintenance, in-service support, and eventual dismantling.

Development of the M51.3 variant began after the French government signed a deal with Airbus in 2014 for upgrade work intended to equip the next-generation SNLE 3G ballistic missile submarines. In May 2016, Airbus and Safran entered a joint partnership to develop the M51.3, with an anticipated service entry around 2025. The first M51.3 flight test was conducted from the Biscarrosse missile test range in south-western France in November 2023. The variant entered operational service in October 2025. In August 2025, the DGA awarded ArianeGroup the contract for development and production of the M51.4, the next planned iteration of the M51 family.

Design

The M51.3 is a solid-propellant, three-stage ballistic missile. Its propulsion system is directly derived from the solid-propellant boosters of the Ariane 5 launch vehicle. Like other blunt-nosed submarine-launched ballistic missiles, the M51.3 employs an extensible aerospike in the nose section. ArianeGroup states that the missile reaches an apogee of more than 2,000 km before re-entering the atmosphere.

The M51.3 carries four to six independently targetable TNO-2 (Tête Nucléaire Océanique) thermonuclear warheads. Compared with the preceding M51.1 and M51.2 variants, the M51.3 offers improved range, accuracy, and penetration capability. France does not officially disclose the M51.3 range; independent estimates place it at more than 9,500 km, an increase over the approximately 8,000 to 9,000 km range of earlier M51 variants.

Operational history

On 6 October 2026, France conducted the first submarine launch of the M51.3, firing an unarmed missile from the Triomphant-class ballistic missile submarine Le Vigilant off the coast of Finistère. The acceptance firing, carried out under Operation Smertrios by the DGA and the French Navy with support from ArianeGroup and Naval Group, validated Le Vigilant's ability to operate its missile system following a major maintenance period. The flight was tracked by DGA Essais de missiles using assets including the instrumentation ship Monge; the missile's impact area was in the North Atlantic, several hundred kilometres from any coast. President Emmanuel Macron observed the launch from the FREMM-class frigate Auvergne.

Every major overhaul of a French nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine is followed by an acceptance test firing of the M51. The 6 October 2026 launch was the first M51.3 firing from a submarine; all prior M51.3 tests had been conducted from the land-based Biscarrosse facility. ArianeGroup stated that the firing was extensively instrumented and included experiments intended to inform development of the M51.4 variant.

Variants

  • M51.1 – Initial production variant carrying four to six TN-75 thermonuclear warheads. Entered service in 2010 as the first M51 deployed on the Triomphant-class submarines.
  • M51.2 – Upgraded variant carrying TNO (Tête Nucléaire Océanique) thermonuclear warheads in a 500 kg re-entry vehicle. Supplemented the M51.1 in service.
  • M51.3 – Current operational variant carrying four to six TNO-2 thermonuclear warheads with improved range, accuracy, and penetration capability. Entered operational service in October 2025. Progressively replacing the M51.1 and M51.2.
  • M51.4 – Next planned variant. The DGA awarded ArianeGroup the development and production contract in August 2025; work began in September 2025.

Operators

  • France – French Navy. Primary strategic armament for the four Triomphant-class ballistic missile submarines (Le Triomphant, Le Téméraire, Le Vigilant, Le Terrible), each carrying up to 16 M51 missiles. The M51.3 will also arm the future SNLE 3G submarines.
