Fabrique Nationale 509 History

The Model FN 509 has become an offshoot of the U.S. Army's earlier modular pistol system, designed to succeed the aging Italian Beretta M9 - the eventual winner, the SIG-Sauer P320.

The Model 509 is an improved version of the competition, reworked for sale and use in the civilian, security and law enforcement markets.

The pistol is designed with a standard polymer and cold forged stainless steel frame with a full length knurled slide assembly. Accessories can be mounted on a short section of MIL-STD-1913 rail under the muzzle and in front of the trigger assembly. There are no manual backups.

Passive collateral is part of the underlying design. A 10-round magazine is supplied to comply with national regulations, although the standard feed is in 17-round capacity. The 4" long barrel can be screwed in to accommodate the silencer. The load compartment indicator shows the operator the status of the launch compartment. Triggers are Double Action Only (DAO), and the Iron Battle Sights are fixed 3-dot illumination (law enforcement can use a fixed 3-dot night vision version).

The straps are interchangeable. The overall length of the gun reaches 7.4 inches. The slide stop lever and magazine release can be operated with two hands. [ /p]

The current market forms are the FN 509 and the FN 509 Tactical, the latter with a threaded barrel, Low Profile Optical Mounting System (LPOMS) and an optional 24-count extended magazine.
