History

In 1999, Poland transitioned from the Warsaw Pact to NATO, triggering the need to adapt their firearms to NATO standards. Their response was the development of the UKM-2000, a machine gun designed to use NATO-standard ammunition. Despite its Western ammunition compatibility, the UKM-2000 retained a Soviet-style appearance reminiscent of the Kalashnikov PK series due to its design roots. The weapon's features included a pneumatic rotary bolt, adjustable gas cylinder, and a practical carry handle for changing hot barrels.

The UKM-2000 came in various versions, catering to different needs. Variants included collapsible models for special forces, vehicular adaptations, and modernized versions with enhanced features and accessory support. With a weight of approximately 8.5 kg, an overall length of about 47.5 inches, and a firing rate of 600 to 700 rounds per minute, the machine gun demonstrated respectable firepower. Over 1,200 units of the UKM-2000 were manufactured by 2016, showcasing its significance and adoption in Poland's military arsenal.
