History of the Extar EP9
The Extar "EP9" belongs to the "Personal Defense Weapon" (PDW) category of firearms - neither a true pistol, submachine gun, or submachine gun (thought to be in the form of a 9mm caliber carbine ). This arm benefits from being compact and lightweight, making it easier to maneuver in tight spaces and often transportable. This series is used for law enforcement, security details and personal home defense.
Arms manufacturer Extar USA is located in Lake Havasu, Arizona. EP9 was launched in 2018.
The general layout of the EP9 is traditional, as the pistol grip/trigger assembly is under the frame and the magazine is directly in front. The beveled trigger ring tapers back to widen the trigger finger opening. The stock/strut hardware extends back through the tube assembly. The muzzle only extends forward a short distance and may still have a silencer.
Above the receiver and above the front end section is a long Picatinny rail for mounting optical aids (red dot sight, magnifying glass, etc.). Additional tactical accessories can be mounted under the front end (eg foregrip or laser sight).
The EP9 relies on a proven blowback operating system for its semi-auto shooting action. Its size and weight make for a stable close range solution for the popular and ubiquitous 9x19mm pistol cartridge used in duty, security and law enforcement pistols worldwide.
The weapon has a last-round bolt hold-on function, the control lever is on the left side of the gun body, and the loading handle is on the left side (the ejection port is on the right side).
One of the selling points of this PDW is its Glock magazine compatibility. The EP9 is fed from 15- and 17-round Glock-style magazines or an extended 33-round full-length magazine.
The overall length of the gun is 24 inches, although the barrel assembly is only 6.5 inches long, keeping the gun small and compact. With the struts installed, the weight is only 4.22 lbs (otherwise 4 lbs).
