History
The Bor, a Polish bolt-action sniper rifle, fires both 7.62×51mm NATO and .338 Lapua Magnum rounds. Initially code-named Alex, it was developed by Aleksander Leżucha, the mastermind behind the 12.7×99mm NATO Wilk anti-materiel rifle.
With Poland joining NATO in 1999, the military required new firearms compatible with NATO standards. This triggered the development of the Bor at the Mechanical Equipment Research and Developing Centre (OBR SM) in Tarnów in the early 2000s. Funded by the Polish Science Research and Information Technology Ministry and produced by OBR SM Tarnów, the new sniper rifle is set to replace existing precision rifles in Polish service.
Testing began in 2005 and the Bor was showcased at the International Defense Industry Exhibition later that year. Production commenced in 2006. By 2007, the 7.62mm Bor successfully cleared all requisite tests for entry into Polish inventories. The Polish Armed Forces began procuring the Bor in 2007, and by 2011, the rifle had undergone several operational improvements, including changes to its rail integration system, trigger, bipod, magazine well, and bolt action, along with the addition of a more durable, corrosion-resistant barrel.
The Bor sports a bullpup-configuration with a bolt-action and a magazine-fed design. Despite having a 680 mm barrel length for accuracy, its overall length is only 1,038 mm due to the bullpup configuration. The rifle is lightweight thanks to a free-floating fluted barrel. A double-baffle muzzle brake reduces recoil by up to 30%. The straight "in-line" design of the barrel-receiver group minimizes muzzle flip. Other features include a sturdy adjustable bipod, adjustable buttstock and cheek riser, a folding/adjustable monopod, and a MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail for mounting optical sights. The standard telescopic sight is a Leupold 4.5–14×50.
