History of the RPG-22 (web)
The rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) weapon system, which originated in 1954 with the RPG-2 and later evolved into models like the RPG-7, has remained stable over the years. These simple yet effective weapons are easy to train and use, making them lethal in the hands of anyone capable, and they serve as a cost-efficient solution for countering enemy armor, light vehicles, and fortified positions.
Among the RPG series, the RPG-22 stands out as an evolution of the earlier RPG-18, maintaining its relevance since its deployment during the Soviet war in Afghanistan in 1985. Similar to the American M72 LAW, the RPG-22 is a one-time use weapon firing high-explosive anti-tank rounds at a range of 200 meters, with a maximum firing range of 250 meters. Despite its inherent lack of guidance, the RPG-22 remains a valuable asset for the Russian Armed Forces and several other nations, given its lightweight and compact design, allowing infantry to carry it with ease.
The RPG-22's launch tube is made of lightweight fiberglass, which is discarded after firing to reduce the soldier's burden. However, its unguided nature means accuracy decreases with distance. Despite this limitation, the RPG-22 remains actively used by various countries and saw action during the Ukrainian-Russian war from 2014 to 2024.
