History

In the late 1970s, the Chinese Army and Police needed a new compact pistol to replace the aging 7.65mm Type 52 (Walther PPK replica). A new pistol will be loaded with native 7.62?17 Type 64 ammunition. In theory, this niche was already occupied by the 7.62mm Type 64 pocket pistol developed in the previous decade, but in practice mass production of the Type 64 was delayed until the early 1980s due to the so-called Cultural Revolution events. As a result, Chinese state factories developed a new 7.62mm pocket pistol around 1976-1978. Officially designated the 7.62mm Type 77, mass production began in 1981 and was subsequently adopted by the Chinese military and other law enforcement agencies.

Today, the pistol is mostly obsolete, but it is still in service with some police departments in China.

This miniature pistol also spawned a number of commercial, export-only models sold by Norinco. The first is the NORINCO Model 77-1, which fires the same 7.62?17 ammunition, but has a slightly longer grip for 8 rounds and English markings on the slide.

Next up are the heavily modified Model 77Bs, the NORINCO NP-20, and a few others, which are essentially brand new pistols that fire the significantly more powerful 9?19 Luger ammunition, but feature the same one-handed trigger mechanism.

The Type 77 pocket pistol is a traditional all-steel semi-automatic pistol with a single recoil action. It also features a single-action trigger with internal firing pin and a frame-mounted safety located on the left side of the gun behind the trigger.

The single stack magazine holds 7 rounds and the magazine release button is located on the frame behind the trigger guard. An unusual feature of the Type 77 pistol is that it is designed for optional one-handed firing via the so-called Chylewsky device.

The front of the trigger guard is a single vertical protrusion that can be pulled back with the launcher's index finger. When going back, the chute also retracts and cycles to load a new round.

When the weapon is fired, the trigger slider of the trigger guard and the vertical portion of the trigger are locked in the forward position by pulling the trigger. The gun can also be loaded in the traditional way by grasping the rear of the slide with the unfired hand and pulling it back.
