History of the Star Model Z84
Star Bonifacio Echeverria, S.A.'s post-WWII submachine gun design was based on the German wartime MP40, marketed as the Star Z-45. The series subsequently evolved to include the modernized Z-70 used by Spanish military personnel. By 1984, it was decided to produce a new submachine gun based on a new light and compact design, the Star Z-84. The Z-84 displayed an Israeli UZI-esque appearance and proved reliable even after hiding.
However, after the 1994 assault weapons ban, the U.S. civilian firearms market was closed to Star, which severely limited potential sales in the United States. Although the weapon has been tested by several countries, it has never been adopted.
Star Group disbanded in 1997 after 92 years of developing and manufacturing firearms.
The Z-84 is loaded with the widely accepted German 9x19mm Parabellum pistol cartridge and is fired by a recoil operating system using an open bolt design. The rate of fire is 600 rounds per minute, fed from a detachable straight magazine of 25 or 30 rounds. Like the Israeli UZI (configuration replicated around the world), the Z-84's magazine is located at the bottom of the pistol grip. The action only allows full automatic fire, which means the operator must be extra careful not to empty the magazine too quickly. The grip is the focal point of the design, and when loaded with the magazine, it results in a well-balanced, naturally accurate weapon.
The trigger ring is intentionally large for use with gloved hands, and the shielded sight assembly is attached to the front and rear of the receiver in the usual way. The receiver largely masks the short run. Optional folding stock with two supports allows the gun to have a barrel length of 24 inches when extended. When the stock is hinged to the receiver, the length is reduced to 16 inches.
Weight is a manageable 7 pounds, while the overall construction is stamped steel and custom castings.

Automatic
Bullets are automatically ejected from the breech, new bullets are removed from the chuck and inserted into the chamber, and the bullets will fire continuously as long as the trigger is pulled and ammunition is supplied.
Backflush operation
The air pressure created by the rearward movement of the fired case provides the necessary bolt movement, case ejection and stripping of the new case from the magazine.
Open the latch
The system uses an internal mechanism, in which the bolt and associated working parts are located in the rear of the receiver, without a cartridge chamber. Pulling the trigger moves the bolt forward, chambering the cartridge and firing the bullet in one motion - and eventually resets throughout the cycle by the energy generated.
