History of the Kalashnikov AK-203
The Kalashnikov AK-203 is a joint Indo-Russian assault rifle project based on the modern AK-103 system currently used by the Russian military . The design retains the same 7.62x39mm chamber and general form and function, providing the Indian military with a proven native infantry-grade solution. In 2022, it was announced that local licensed production of the rifle had been approved by Russia, opening the way for eventual mass production of the weapon.
This firearm was developed from 2007 to 2010.
The current standard rifle of the Indian Army is the locally designed, developed and manufactured INSAS (detailed elsewhere on this site), chambered in a medium 5.56mm rifle cartridge. While the cartridge is effective, it tends to lose penetration at medium and long distances, reducing the effectiveness of this weapon in the open field.
The AK-203 will improve range penetration with its full-power 7.62mm rifle caliber built around a proven gas-powered Kalashnikov bolt action and user-friendly/easy-maintain pedigree in the field.
The AK-203 has a section of Picatinny rails above and below the frame and handguards for mounting various optics, sights and other tactical accessories. The rifle retains its iron sights as a backup measure. A slotted muzzle brake is mounted on the "business" end of the gun to aid recoil.
As usual, all controls, including the charging handle, are on the right side of the frame (as is the eject port). The weapon is fed from a detachable 30-round magazine, but also supports a 50-round capacity quad-stack magazine.
The shoulder rest is the "skeleton" that is adjustable to reduce weight and allow the shooter to be customizable. Like other Kalashnikov assault rifles, the AK-203 features a recognizable arrangement of gas cylinders above the barrel (whose internal role is a rotary bolt gas operation).
The empty weight of the entire system is 3.8 kg.
Dimensions include an overall length of 37 inches when unfolded and 27.8 inches when folded. The barrel assembly measures 16.3 inches.
The rate of fire reaches about 700 rounds per minute and the range is up to 800 meters (effective, max).
The addition of the new AK-203 will undoubtedly enhance the capabilities of Indian infantry on the battlefield, especially in open wars in the countrys mountainous regions against regional players such as China and Pakistan.
