History
The Type 97 is a tried and tested Chinese copy of the Remington Model 870 12 caliber pump-action shotgun, native to the United States (see other local (this website), mainly to the People's Liberation Army Ground Forces (PLAGF), the People's Armed Police Force (PAP) and the Coast Guard. The weapon is manufactured locally by "Hawk Industries" under the supervised branding of the local defense company China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO).
Like the U.S. M870, the weapon is used in both military and civilian fields, supporting lethal, non-lethal (counter-insurgency) and sport/wild ammunition types.
The weapon is available in three different versions: a combat-oriented military/law enforcement grade shotgun, a bullpup configuration (action behind the pistol grip/trigger assembly) and a general purpose manual power, Pump action model. So, depending on the game format, the weapon can be a semi-automatic action or a user-driven pump action structure as grenades come in and out of the system.
Military models use detachable box magazines in the arrangement, while civilian models are fed with traditional under-barrel tubular magazines. This weapon can hold 5+1 grenades when fully loaded (since the grenades are loaded), regardless of model.
The weapon has a total weight of 7 pounds, an overall length of 34.8 inches, and a barrel assembly length of 18.5 inches.
Aim weapons with adjustable tangential sights. Lifting loops allow shoulder straps to be attached for support. The stock is hinged and the ejection port is located on the right side of the frame.
The original production model became the "Type 97", which was not in stock to provide a more tactical look and portability. An optional vertical fore grip aids forward support for the off-hand.
It was followed by the "Type 97-1" (exported as "HP9-1" and "Hawk 982"), which entered the PAP ranks for anti-crowd/riot. The "Model 97-2" is closer to the pattern of the Remington Model 1100 (detailed elsewhere on this page), offering a folding stock, adjustable sights and semi-automatic action.
The Type 97 MIL/LE model is designed for frontline military and police forces (including special forces) and features a detachable magazine under the receiver, as well as extended support for tactical accessories laser sight).
The most drastic change in the design is the "Hawk Bullpup," which converts the weapon to a more handheld, more portable solution, reducing the overall length by 25 inches, while retaining the full-length barrel assembly. This version also features an integrated carrying handle, which is more tactically oriented and suitable for large-scale clearing operations by police and military units.
