History
The Flyweight Assault Machine Gun (FAMG) is a planned lightweight, man-portable, belt-fed weapon for United States Special Operations Command. It is intended to replace the aging Mk 46 series while retaining the 5.56×45 mm NATO cartridge.
The program seeks to reduce weapon weight and recoil while improving reliability, accessory compatibility, and handling. The weapon is intended to support maneuver and suppressive fire against area targets at ranges of at least 500 m.
Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division published the FAMG Area of Interest in June 2026 on behalf of USSOCOM. The official solicitation requested proposed weapons with a minimum Technology Readiness Level of 7. Candidate selection was planned to progress through written proposals, a virtual pitch, a request for prototype proposals, safety evaluation, user evaluation, product verification testing, and operational testing.
USSOCOM expected to award a contract in 2027 and planned to begin fielding the weapon in fiscal year 2028 after testing. No manufacturer or selected design had been announced in the supplied material.
Design requirements
The solicitation defines performance targets rather than the characteristics of a completed production weapon. The FAMG must use linked 5.56×45 mm ammunition and support left-hand belt feeding. Its preferred selector arrangement is Safe and Automatic, although Safe, Automatic, and Semi-Automatic modes are acceptable.
The complete weapon, including its standard rail interface, carry handle, bipod, buttstock, and barrel but excluding sights and accessories, must weigh no more than 5.2 kg (11.5 lb). The program goal is 4.5 kg (10 lb). Maximum length with the buttstock collapsed is 991 mm (39 in), with a goal of 889 mm (35 in).
A quick-change barrel must be replaceable within 30 seconds. The weapon should have a side-folding, collapsible buttstock that permits charging and firing while folded, together with a two-position folding charging handle. The bipod should deploy and stow rapidly, provide height adjustment, and lock when loaded to prevent unwanted pan and tilt.
Ammunition and mounting
The proposed weapon should safely fire linked 5.56×45 mm Department of Defense ammunition types and high-pressure 5.56×45 mm ammunition. It should function while pulling a belt equivalent to 100 rounds and include an ammunition mounting point and container for at least 100 linked rounds. A training conversion kit is also requested.
The design should integrate with existing pintle or swing-arm mounts. Its muzzle device should be removable by unit-level personnel using standard tools. A retention system should keep ammunition on the feed tray while the top cover is open.
Accessories
The FAMG is intended to work with USSOCOM Visual Augmentation Systems and Weapon Accessories. Requirements include compatibility with optics, clip-on night-vision devices, aiming lasers, and fire-control systems.
The requested accessory interfaces include 381 mm (15 in) of MIL-STD-1913 rail at the 12 o'clock position and 178 mm (7 in) at the 6 o'clock position. The handguard should also provide at least four usable M-LOK slots on each side at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions.
Reliability and testing requirements
The principal reliability threshold is a mean of 1,400 rounds between Class I stoppages, with a goal exceeding 2,000 rounds. The required mean interval between Class I essential-function failures is at least 1,800 rounds. For Class II or III essential-function failures, the threshold is at least 15,000 rounds.
Developmental testing should demonstrate a receiver life of 100,000 rounds, with a goal of 200,000 rounds. Required barrel life is 15,000 rounds, with a goal of 20,000 rounds. The weapon and ammunition should operate without stoppages after exposure to temperatures from approximately −29 °C to 74 °C (−20 °F to 165 °F). Rough-handling tests must not cause unintended bolt release or movement of the safety.
Program status
The FAMG remained a competitive development requirement in 2026 rather than an operational weapon. A successful proposal was required to complete limited safety testing, user evaluation, product verification testing, and operational testing. A successfully completed prototype transaction could lead to follow-on production without another competitive procedure.
