History
The SIG Sauer M18 Modular Handgun System is a compact 9 mm military service pistol derived from the striker-fired P320 family. The U.S. Army selected SIG Sauer's Modular Handgun System proposal in January 2017, choosing the full-size M17 and compact M18 as replacements for older service pistols.
The M18 uses the same basic modular architecture as the M17 but has a shorter slide and 99 mm (3.9 in) barrel. The U.S. Army employs the compact model for roles including military police and criminal investigators, while the Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy adopted the M18 as their principal model within the Modular Handgun System family.
By 2026, the U.S. Air Force stated that it remained satisfied with the M18 and did not plan to consider another handgun until the system approached the end of its service life. The service said its limited small-arms procurement budget would instead remain focused on older and higher-priority weapons.
Development and selection
The Army's Modular Handgun System acquisition followed a series of industry meetings and a Request for Proposal released on September 2, 2015. The competition sought a complete handgun system with improved accuracy, ergonomics, reliability, durability and maintainability compared with legacy pistols. Requirements included an external safety, an accessory rail and ergonomic adjustment intended to accommodate users from the 5th to the 95th percentile. SIG Sauer won the competition with pistols based on the P320. The XM17 used a 120 mm (4.7 in) barrel, while the compact XM18 used a 99 mm (3.9 in) barrel. After selection, the weapons received the M17 and M18 designations. Published procurement figures differ by source: SIG Sauer was cited in 2026 as describing a contract for as many as 480,000 M17 and M18 pistols over ten years, while an earlier procurement plan described approximately 421,000 pistols distributed among the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy.
Glock protested the award after the 2017 selection. The U.S. Government Accountability Office denied the protest in June 2017. Testing also identified several technical issues. Early test reports described two broken triggers, failures of the slide to lock open after the last round, and so-called double-ejection events with XM1152 ammunition. Changes to fire-control components and revised user instruction addressed reported problems before large-scale fielding continued.
By March 2019, approximately 27,000 M17 and M18 pistols had been delivered, including about 5,000 M18s. The Navy and Marine Corps were initially receiving smaller quantities for training, demonstration and evaluation. Air Force personnel began receiving M18 pistols in 2019, and an Air Force release cited in the 2026 source stated that the service's Small Arms Program Office had purchased about 125,000 M18 pistols.
In December 2019, SIG Sauer introduced the P320-M18 commercial model as a civilian counterpart to the military pistol. The manufacturer described it in its P320-M18 announcement, while Military.com also reported on the commercial release and the military procurement program.
2025 inspection and continued service
In 2025, the Air Force ordered a service-wide inspection of its M18 pistols after the shooting death of an airman assigned to F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. Air Force Global Strike Command temporarily suspended use of the pistol while the incident was investigated. The death was initially announced as involving an M18 discharge, but another airman was later arrested and charged with manslaughter and making a false statement.
Global Strike Command inspected nearly 8,000 M18 pistols and reported that none had misfired. The command returned the weapon to service in August 2025. The Air Force subsequently said it had revalidated the M18's safety and reliability within the preceding two years. In August 2026, an Air Force spokesperson confirmed that the service planned to retain the M18 rather than seek a replacement.
Design
The U.S. Army describes the M18 as a mechanically locked, short-recoil-operated 9 mm semi-automatic pistol. The official M17/M18 Modular Handgun System portfolio identifies the M18 as the compact member of the system, paired with the full-size M17.
The weapon uses a striker-fired operating system and a removable modular chassis within a polymer grip module. Three grip-module sizes are available to accommodate different hand sizes. This modular construction allows the serialized internal fire-control assembly to be separated from the grip module for maintenance or reconfiguration. A 2022 modularity overview describes the Fire Control Unit as the central component that permits different grip and slide configurations within the P320-derived system.
The issued M18 incorporates four internal safety mechanisms: a primary sear notch, secondary sear notch, striker safety lock and disconnector safety mechanism. An external ambidextrous manual safety brings the total to five safety mechanisms identified by the Army. The pistol also has an external ambidextrous slide catch lever.
The M18 accepts a standard 17-round magazine or an extended 21-round magazine. Military descriptions also identify night sights and a removable rear sight plate. The Modular Handgun System requirement included an integrated accessory rail for lights and other equipment.
Operational history
The Army uses the M18 alongside the larger M17, with the compact pistol assigned to personnel including military police and criminal investigators. Other U.S. military services concentrated primarily on the M18. By March 2019, the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps had all received M17 or M18 pistols.
The Air Force does not use the M17 according to its 2026 statement. Its M18 inventory has been distributed across combat-arms organizations, and approximately 125,000 pistols had been purchased through the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center's Small Arms Program Office according to a 2020 Air Force release cited by the source.
The Marine Corps selected the M18 as its service pistol within the Modular Handgun System program. Earlier procurement planning called for approximately 35,000 MHS pistols for the Marine Corps, while the Navy planned to acquire roughly 60,000 to 61,000 M18-family pistols. These figures represented acquisition plans and should not be treated as confirmed current inventories.
