History
The Eurofighter Typhoon and Eurosam SAMP/T are separate European weapon systems that Italy combined in a layered air-defense deployment to the Gulf in 2026. The Typhoon provides mobile fighter interception, while SAMP/T provides ground-based missile defense using vertically launched Aster 30 interceptors.
Italy's 2026 deployment combined four F-2000A Eurofighters, an E-550A airborne early-warning aircraft, ground-based surveillance radars, counter-unmanned-aircraft equipment, a reported SAMP/T battery, and a reported Skynex gun battery. The force was intended to protect selected air bases, command sites, and critical infrastructure against aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and short-range ballistic missiles.
The two principal systems have independent development histories. Eurofighter emerged from a multinational European fighter program of the 1980s, while SAMP/T was created by France and Italy as a mobile European surface-to-air and anti-ballistic missile system.
Eurofighter development
The Eurofighter program developed from European fighter studies undertaken during the 1970s and early 1980s. The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain launched the Future European Fighter Aircraft program in 1983. France later withdrew to develop the Dassault Rafale, while the remaining partners continued with the European Fighter Aircraft program.
Eurofighter GmbH was established in 1986. The British Aerospace Experimental Aircraft Programme demonstrator, whose configuration anticipated the later fighter, flew in August 1986. The first Eurofighter development aircraft made its maiden flight on 27 March 1994. An Italian development aircraft, DA3, became the first Eurofighter development aircraft to fly with EJ200 engines in June 1995.
Production and support contracts were signed in 1998, and the Typhoon name was adopted that year. Series-production aircraft began flying in 2003, followed by formal type acceptance and deliveries to the partner nations. The Italian Air Force declared initial operational capability in December 2005 and formed its first operational squadron in 2006.
SAMP/T development
Full-scale development of SAMP/T and the Aster 30 interceptor began in 1990. The system was developed through Eurosam, a Franco-Italian consortium associated with MBDA and Thales. Production engineering and initial volume production began in 1997, followed by qualification firing trials from 1999.
A complete SAMP/T system conducted a qualification trial in 2005 involving radar acquisition, tracking, and interception. Operational evaluation with French and Italian forces began in 2008. The system became operational in French service in 2010, while Italy activated its first SAMP/T regiment in 2012. 2026 Italian Gulf deployment
On 15 March 2026, an attack on a shelter at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait caused the loss of an Italian MQ-9A reconnaissance unmanned aircraft. Open-source reporting also stated that an Italian Eurofighter was damaged. According to the Italian Ministry of Defence information reproduced in the source material, a broader Italian air-defense force had become operational in the Gulf from the second half of March 2026.
The confirmed air component included Task Group Typhoon with four F-2000A fighters, Task Group Argo with one E-550A CAEW aircraft, Task Group Medal with a C-130J or KC-130J transport aircraft, Task Group Kuwait with an AN/TPS-77 radar, and a counter-unmanned-aircraft group equipped with ACUS-E. Italian personnel were officially identified in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Open-source reporting assessed Taif's King Fahd Air Base as the principal fighter location, but this was not officially confirmed.
Reporting on the land component identified one SAMP/T battery and two Leonardo KRONOS radars, with radars reportedly positioned in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. The exact KRONOS models were not disclosed. Reporting also placed a Skynex 35 mm gun battery in the United Arab Emirates. This combination created several defensive layers rather than a single region-wide shield.
Design
Eurofighter F-2000A
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, supersonic, canard-delta multirole fighter. It was originally optimized for air superiority and later gained broader air-to-surface capabilities. Italy designates its single-seat combat aircraft F-2000A.
The aircraft is powered by two Eurojet EJ200 turbofan engines. Each engine is rated at approximately 60 kN dry thrust and 90 kN with afterburner. The source gives a maximum take-off weight of 23,500 kg, a published maximum speed of 2,495 km/h, and capacity for 6,500 kg of external stores.
Italian Eurofighters are cleared for radar-guided Meteor and AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, IRIS-T and AIM-9L infrared-guided missiles, and an internal 27 mm Mauser cannon. Italy did not disclose which missile types or variants were actually carried during the 2026 Gulf mission.
SAMP/T battery
SAMP/T is a road-mobile surface-to-air and anti-ballistic missile system based on the Aster missile family. A baseline battery is organized around a multifunction radar, an engagement and command module, and multiple truck-mounted launchers. Published descriptions specify four to six launchers, with eight vertically launched Aster 30 missiles on each launcher.
The baseline system provides 360-degree engagement coverage and is credited with tracking up to 100 aerial targets while engaging up to 10 simultaneously. Published data give an engagement range of up to 120 km against air-breathing targets. The Aster 30 interceptor can reach approximately Mach 4.5 and uses inertial guidance with radar-provided updates followed by active electromagnetic homing.
The Aster 30 is approximately 4.9 m long and weighs about 450 kg according to the source material. Its maneuvering system combines aerodynamic control with lateral thrusters positioned around the missile's center of gravity for high-g terminal corrections.
Sensors and command network
The E-550A airborne early-warning aircraft served as a command-and-control node for the Italian fighter element. Its ELTA EL/W-2085 electronically scanned radar provides 360-degree surveillance and is integrated with communications intelligence, electronic intelligence, electronic-support measures, identification-friend-or-foe equipment, and missile-warning functions.
The ground-based AN/TPS-77 provides persistent long-range surveillance and can connect to command networks through an open ASTERIX interface. Together with the E-550A and KRONOS radars, these sensors can provide a broader air picture from which controllers can assign targets to fighters, surface-to-air missiles, guns, or electronic countermeasures according to target characteristics.
Operational history
The Eurofighter Typhoon's combat debut occurred during the 2011 military intervention in Libya, when British and Italian aircraft performed operational missions that included reconnaissance and ground attack. The type has also been used extensively for national and NATO air-defense duties.
SAMP/T has participated in NATO integrated air-defense deployments and exercises. France and Italy provided SAMP/T systems to Ukraine beginning in 2023 for defense against Russian air and missile attacks. The available research also records later deployments and further development of the SAMP/T NG configuration.
In the 2026 Gulf deployment, the Italian systems were organized to divide defensive tasks by target type and distance. Eurofighters could intercept aircraft and cruise missiles away from defended sites and could visually identify uncertain tracks. SAMP/T provided the longer-range ground-based missile layer, while Skynex guns and electronic countermeasures were available for lower-cost drone threats.
The deployed force was limited in scale.
