History
The 2K22 "Tunguska" (NATO codename SA-19 ??"Grisom") is a self-propelled, tracked air defense system that combines the power of a rapid-fire automatic gun with the capability of a surface-to-surface attack-air missile. The targeting system is based on radar sensors, and its fire control is handled by IFF (identification of friend or foe). All major tracking and engagement facilities are mounted on a movable turret, allowing a 360-degree base fire arc of +80/-6 elevation/descent respectively. Piloted by four people, the vehicle is powered by a water-cooled V-46-4 diesel engine with a V12 turbo and 780 hp. The Tunguska was designed and produced by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau between 1970 and 1980.
The Tunguska entered production in 1976 and is in service with some armed forces at the time of writing (2013).
As a tracked vehicle, the 2K22, with its engine ports and hydropneumatic suspension system, has the inherent ability to traverse terrain as part of a motorized mechanized formation. The Tunguska has a top speed of 40 mph and a range of 310 miles. The chassis can overcome obstacles up to 1 meter.
Primary armament consists of 8 x rocket launchers supplemented by 2 x 30mm 2A38M cannons with 1,904 projectiles onboard. Missile support includes 9M311, 9M311K, 9M311-1 or 9M113-M1 series missiles.
Starting with the 2K22 in 1982, some notable variants of this model have been produced. The final production model became the 1986 2K22M for the GM-352M chassis.
It was followed by the improved 2K22M1 in 1988, which was based on the GM-5975 chassis and used a 10 km long-range missile (9M311-M1) as well as an upgraded Fire Control System (FCS). The final evolution of the Tunguska system is the 2K22M, which has an all-new FCS and long-range missile support (18 km).
The modern 8x8 anti-wheel missile system "Pantsir-S1" will eventually completely replace the 2K22 Tunguska in the Russian military list.
